[RED TRACK 🚉] Last June saw the publication of SYSTRA's most important document, the 2023 Activity Report. Meanwhile, our teams were busy with some major metro extensions inaugurated in Paris and Copenhagen, as well as promising contracts won such as the Californian high-speed rail and the Brenner base tunnel's systems.
Read all about these events and more in the latest edition of #RedTrack! 📭
Did you know Rail Baltica is expected to become one of #Europe's most significant rail projects?
With 870km of new track, the $8BN high-speed #railway will connect the Baltic States - Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania - to the European rail network. Engineering consulting firm, IDOM designed 389 km (44% of the total line) in six different sections and implemented a connected data environment allowing project teams, from multiple organizations across three countries, to work seamlessly and access real-time data to minimize errors.

The release of AECOM's "From Vision to Reality: a new high-speed rail playbook" report offers valuable insights into the critical success factors and best practices shaping the implementation of high-speed rail (HSR) projects globally. By analyzing input from senior decision-makers across the industry, the report highlights the evolving priorities in HSR development, emphasizing factors such as economic growth, technology integration, passenger experience, and environmental sustainability. Regional variations in success factors underscore the need for tailored strategies to address diverse challenges and opportunities. With the global push towards low-carbon transportation, the playbook provides actionable recommendations to streamline HSR delivery, foster international cooperation, and create thriving, connected communities.
Our recently published #highspeedrail research is featured in Mass Transit magazine...
“Our integrated transportation networks continue to evolve rapidly and high-speed rail has a crucial role to play in this ongoing transformation,” said Lara Poloni, AECOM’s president. “It’s our hope that, through better understanding of the opportunities and challenges attached to these mega projects, that existing networks can expand and proposed networks can move from vision to reality, helping create thriving, connected communities.” Check out more:

Here's how I keep up to date with the Rail sector outside the office:
1) The new editions of Rail News, Rail Engineer and Railstaff come into the office. 📰
2) Latest editions inevitably end up on the Grandad's reading pile.
3) While visiting I get told the latest on different projects and new technology in the sector.
How do you keep up with Rail news? 🚄

An insightful article from our Arup Global Rail Leader, TC Chew, on how the rail industry can find space to prioritise resilience planning and investment. Read it at the link below. A systems thinking approach is required and as a telecoms engineer I know my discipline will need to continue to play our part. #Rail#Resilience#Telecoms#WeAreArup
POLAND ANNOUNCED A TENDER FOR HIGH-SPEED RAIL TUNNEL
Poland announces a tender for the construction of a high-speed rail tunnel in Łódź as part of program Centralny Port Komunikacyjny aka CPK. This contract is the third and largest for the CPK project, which is currently the most advanced railway initiative in Poland. The other two contracts are already under construction in central Łódź.
Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak highlighted the importance of the tunnel, noting that it is a vital component of the planned 'Y' route, which will connect Warsaw, CPK, Łódź, Wrocław, and Poznań with high-speed rail. He emphasized that this investment is crucial for the future operation of the Polish rail system and represents a major step toward the goal of a 100-minute Poland.
The tunnel will be excavated using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) with a diameter of about 14 meters and will stretch approximately 4.6 kilometers. It will include two tracks to accommodate trains traveling in both directions. This project will mark the longest and widest underground railway crossing ever built in Poland using this method.

❓High-Speed Railway for $130 Billion or the uST Complex?
A high-speed railway is under construction in California. The plan aims to provide fast and eco-friendly passenger transport between Los Angeles and San Francisco. However, several issues have arisen during the project’s implementation: long timelines, unforeseen construction challenges, and an exorbitant price tag of $130 billion.
Discover why this is happening and explore:
🔹What challenges engineers faced during the project?
🔹Why is further funding for the project in question?
🔹Can the uST transport and infrastructure complexes meet the emerging demand at lower costs and in a shorter timeframe?

The article, subject of this post, in the Daily Express, is temporarily unavailable in some countries.
The link is from Spain to Morocco, probably under, not over, the strait of Gibralter. Morocco already has a high speed rail. Further to this, there is some plan to connect Moroccan sun-generated electricity to the UK through high voltage DC cable(s), especially since the energy developments (or de-evolution) caused by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and sanctions.

"Europe-Africa Gibraltar strait fixed link
This project involves the construction of an underwater tunnel housing a high-speed rail link connecting Spain and Morocco. The plan was first seriously suggested in the 1970s and formalised in the 1980s, yet progress on the project has been slow."

🚆 Driving innovation and investment in the rail industry 🚆
This week, I had the honour of speaking at the New Civil Engineer Rail and Transit conference, where, alongside Robert Cook and Chris Porter, I shared my thoughts on driving innovation and investment in the rail industry. Here are just three of my main takeaways:
👉 The government wants economic growth and rail can help deliver it – for every £1 spent on rail, £2.50 is generated for the wider economy according to the Railway Industry Association.
👉 Early political signs are positive but we need more clarity including a fully funded strategic pipeline for the next 5-10 years to turn ambition into delivery and realise positive societal outcomes for a growing population. Schemes such as the Bakerloo Line extension, DLR Extension, West London Orbital and Crossrail 2 will improve connectivity, unlock housing and create sustainable development to drive growth.
👉 Clients and industry need to further collaborate to deliver quality infrastructure on time and to budget. This includes building the workforce of the future to close the skills gap and establishing collaborative funding and delivery models to encourage innovation across the supply chain to transition to a sustainable world.
