📖 Leadership Chronicles: Inside NexWafe with Rick Schwerdtfeger, PhD 📖 The Leadership Chronicles series poses questions to NexWafe executives about their career, professional experiences and the company. 🔹 Rick Schwerdtfeger, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) 🔹 Joined NexWafe October 2023 Part 5 Q: What are your plans for 2024? A: My plans for 2024 include a move to Germany in January and focusing my time and energy on helping the NexWafe team solve the remaining technical challenges to prepare for large pilot production in 2025 and global scaleup in 2026 and beyond. I will also support the CEO and the Board in our fundraising efforts to position the company for success. Keeping up with global PV technology status will also keep me busy as I travel to speak at conferences around the world. Q: What do you think is the most important piece of advice for people who want to pursue their career as a business leader? A: Passion for your industry is key. Without passion you won’t have the drive and the energy to sustain the pace needed to be successful. But coupled with that, you need a good hobby as well. Because when you do have time away from the office, you need something to intensely enjoy, in my opinion. It gives your brain and body the chance to recharge and focus on something besides work. For me, tennis was my passion, but lately it has shifted to bicycling, boating and fishing. 🚀 Ever Solve a Problem Only to Create a New One? We’ve all been there—trying to improve things but facing unexpected challenges. Here are two examples: 1️⃣ GE’s Six Sigma: GE’s focus on efficiency initially led to significant cost savings but stifled innovation and customer focus. The shift cost GE around $23 billion in lost market value as it struggled to adapt. 2️⃣ Wells Fargo’s Sales Quotas: Aggressive sales quotas drove initial growth but led to unethical practices such as employees opening around 2 million accounts, and legal trouble. The fallout included $185 million in penalties and around 5,300 fired employees. Tips to Avoid These Pitfalls: 🔑 Balance Focus: Don’t lose sight of customer needs and innovation while optimizing. 🔑 Encourage Communication: Create a safe space for feedback to catch issues early. 🔑 Monitor Consequences: Regularly assess the impact of new strategies. 🔑 Align with Values: Ensure goals support core company values. 🔑 Be Flexible: Be ready to adjust strategies as needed.
