What is Fixed Wire Inspection and Testing? Fixed Wire Inspection and Testing is the assessment of an electrical installation’s main electrical wiring system to ensure safety and compliance, in accordance with British Standard BS 7671. An inspection is often carried out every one to five years, depending on the site's requirements. This will involve on-site inspection and testing of the electrical installations, distribution boards, cables, and circuits to ensure safety. Some other ways you might have heard FWIT described are: ✔ Electrical Testing ✔ EICR Testing ✔ Periodic Inspection and Testing According to The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 it is a legal requirement that a duty holder in control of electrical systems ensures they are maintained and safe to use. It is one of the main responsibilities of a duty holder to ensure full control of your electrical infrastructures on-site, complete compliance with systems and documentation, and a safe work environment for all employees. It is imperative that there is confidence throughout the workplace of compliance and evidence to provide in case of an emergency or unplanned visit from the HSE. Your Electrical Safety Rules (ESRs) set out practical requirements for managing electrical safety. The major factors affecting electrical safety are the voltage, current and frequency associated with the equipment and how the work is carried out. The scope of the ESRs should be limited by Voltage level, typically for a factory or similar installation up to and including 11kV, but this depends on the highest voltage on your installation. To ensure that electrical receptacles, distribution boards (DBs), lighting equipment, or tools are properly classified and meet safety standards, follow these steps: 1. **Check Certification Labels**: - Look for certification labels from recognized testing laboratories such as UL (Underwriters Laboratories), CSA (Canadian Standards Association), or CE (Conformité Européenne). These labels indicate that the equipment has been tested and meets specific safety standards. 2. **Verify Compliance with Standards**: - Ensure the equipment complies with relevant national and international standards such as IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standards, NEC (National Electrical Code), or other applicable regulations. 3. **Inspect Manufacturer’s Documentation**: - Review the manufacturer’s technical documentation, which should include details about the classification, ratings, and intended use of the equipment. 4. **Confirm Proper Ratings**: - Verify that the equipment is rated for the intended application. Check for voltage, current, and environmental ratings (e.g., IP ratings for dust and water resistance). 5. **Examine for Safety Features**: - Ensure the equipment has essential safety features, such as grounding (earthing) provisions, overcurrent protection, and proper insulation. 6. **Conduct Visual Inspection**: - Perform a thorough visual inspection for any signs of damage, wear, or modifications that could affect safety. 7. **Request Compliance Certificates**: - Ask the supplier or manufacturer for compliance certificates and test reports to ensure the equipment meets required standards. 8. **Regular Maintenance and Testing**: - Schedule regular maintenance and testing to ensure continued compliance and safety of the equipment. 9. **Consult a Professional**: - If in doubt, consult a certified electrician or safety professional to inspect and verify the equipment’s classification and safety. Following these steps will help ensure that electrical receptacles, DBs, lighting equipment, and tools are properly classified and safe for use.
