STARLINK Can Provide Far More Than You Think in a Disaster when we discuss options for Emergency Communication if the advent of... the option that is entering EM conversations with more regularity would be the use of "Starlink Terminals" and generators. Starlink can be used as emergency communication hubs at shelters, command posts, and field units. Starlink, by using a series of interconnected access points, can cover an area with internet connectivity as large as a neighborhood. Each node in the network would act as a relay. This effort would need AOR coordination and funding support, as well as measured availability and training to jurisdictions. This would provide large local population centers with the ability to receive local warnings and communication. There should also be consideratipn to a State's stance on durability and required backup power-on times for Cell Towers. SB-431 was passed in California mandating Cellular towers backup power must last at least 72 hours. Many states do not have that kind of focus or mitigation measure in place so, when there is a power loss, there is also a loss of service.

The loss that people are experiencing in the California wildfires is unimaginable. We’re continuing to do everything we can to keep people connected and have more than 100 T-Mobile emergency crew members, field engineers, technicians and others working around the clock to restore impacted areas as quickly as possible. "Verizon brought plenty of smaller assets to the scene, including portable generators and temporary cell sites. The cell sites are temporary until Verizon and others can rebuild with permanent infrastructure. Ericsson is the dominant wireless infrastructure vendor in the LA market. Verizon and T-Mobile both use Ericsson in LA. AT&T is swapping out equipment across the U.S. after deciding in 2023 to go with Ericsson’s open Radio Access Network (RAN) technology and to remove Nokia, a process that is now underway and expected to be complete in 2026"
