To avoid an avalanche, backcountry skiers often must overcome their cognitive biases and make difficult choices in highly uncertain environments. The same goes for investing. In the video below, my colleague Patrick Todd, CFA, a portfolio manager at Harding Loevner, discusses more of the parallels between the risks in investing and backcountry skiing and how a thoughtful process can mitigate both.

Anyone who tells you it's easy to lose focus has obviously never skied before. Skiing teaches you to hyper-focus on your own path while simultaneously being hyper aware or your surroundings (other skiers, weather, terrain etc.) A beginner skier just like a young entrepreneur, focuses on everything around them but the important task right in front of them - skiing. If your losing focus, stop looking around you, log out of LinkedIn, stop comparing yourself to others and focus on the one task you know will help you move forward.
