What an absolute joy to participate in the Pro Landscaper Commercial Landscape event at the NEC yesterday. There was a great range of speakers from all key parties across the Landscape Sector discussing the future of Commercial Landscape. It was a pleasure to join Helen Nyul, Liz Nicholson and Jonathan Berry on a panel to discuss how Landscape Leaders are adjusting their approach in response to BNG, and what other opportunities there are for the Landscape sector as a whole.   After an evening to digest the discussions we had, I'm left with the following thoughts: - #BNG is the biggest opportunity and challenge faced by the Landscape sector ; it is new to everyone and we need to work together, across all parties, to make it a success; - We must to collaborate at inception, bringing together Clients, Landscape Architects, Ecologists, Engineers, Landscape Contractors and Landscape Maintenance to get the best outcomes; - The Landscape industry must not be too proud: we need to own our mistakes and learn from them, and share that knowledge so that we all benefit; - Education is fundamental to moving forward - changes in policy bring about new challenges and we should face them head on with grit and proactivity; - We urgently need to address the low numbers of #landscapearchitects and #ecologists graduating in the UK, we need more skilled people in the industry going forwards; - As an industry, we need to educate stakeholders and manage expectations of the appearance of valued BNG landscape typologies i.e. the view that unmown species rich grasslands appear unkempt and messy; - We need to stop criticising other Landscape professionals in the sector, and look to provide constructive feedback and lift each other up; and, - We must own the value of being in the Landscape sector, and talk-up the profession - we're not window dressing, and the material value of Landscape is being seen and valued more now than ever. I feel optimistic and hopeful that great things are going to come, and that we can face this challenge together. #WSPLandscape
