Excavating without knowing the location of underground utilities can lead to injury and costly damage. Next week's Locator Safety Awareness Week provides the opportunity to thank our locators and to highlight the importance of reducing utility-related risk by engaging experienced professional Subsurface Utility Engineering services. Reliable underground and above-ground utility information does matter. #ExperiencedSUEconsultant #T2UtilityEngineers #SafeT2 #ConstructionSafety #LSAW #partofKiwa

🚧 Directional Boring and Hydro Excavation in San Diego for Electrical Panel Upgrade 🚧 Our team recently completed a project in San Diego using hydro excavation, utility potholing, and directional boring to prepare for an electrical panel upgrade. This job required careful handling around existing underground utilities to ensure safety and accuracy. In the video, we use a hydro vac truck. Hydro excavation is ideal for this task, as it allows us to uncover utilities without damaging them. This process uses high-pressure water and a vacuum to safely expose utilities. In the video you can see why utility potholing was necessary. With multiple existing utilities, potholing helped us confirm their exact locations before we began directional drilling. This step is essential for safety and prevents accidental strikes. For this project, we completed directional boring to install both 4" and 3" conduits, providing the necessary infrastructure for future electrical runs. Directional drilling allowed us to lay these conduits with minimal impact on the surrounding area, supporting the client’s panel upgrade efficiently. 🔗 For more information on our hydro excavation services, visit Devco Hydro Excavation Services https://lnkd.in/eVDmwGv8

Over the years there have been many different iterations of rules, regulations and industry practices that determine the depth at which underground utility cables and pipes should be buried. With cables and pipes in the ground that may be up to 100 years old. So, it’s important not to assume that they are buried to current industry guidelines of typically 450mm or deeper depending on the utility type, i.e. gas, fibre, electricity etc. It is quite likely that one or more of the services below your feet are shallower than current regulations and practices. So whatever your job if you are breaking the surface of the ground make sure that you have implemented the same 5P’s of safe digging methodology to determine the presence of cables and pipes and their potential depth. 🔗 Check out our easy to read and free Safe Digging Guide here: https://loom.ly/cWiGQfw Always make it a YES and never a yeah nah and get plans from beforeUdig to start your safe digging journey. #SafeDiggingMonth #beforeUdig #SafetyPractices #WorkSafe

Our dedicated team at Devco Development and Engineering has recently completed a critical phase of our project in Rancho Cucamonga—utility potholing. This essential process allows us to safely and accurately locate existing underground utilities, such as gas, water, sewer, and electrical lines. Why is Utility Potholing Important? Safety First: By identifying the exact locations and depths of existing utilities, we can prevent accidental damage and ensure the safety of our crew and the public. Precision: Accurate data from potholing helps us plan and execute the next stages of our project with greater precision. Efficiency: Minimizing the risk of utility strikes helps keep our projects on schedule and within budget. Tomorrow, we move on to the next phase: Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). With the depths of the utilities now confirmed, HDD allows us to install new utility lines with minimal disruption to the surface environment. This trenchless technology not only enhances efficiency but also supports our commitment to environmentally responsible practices. A big shoutout to our team for their meticulous work and unwavering commitment to safety and excellence. We look forward to sharing more updates as we progress. ASOE = Alternative Semi-Structural Operating Envelope A specific approach within the field of trenchless technology and pipeline rehabilitation. It represents a design philosophy and operational framework for installing liners or repairing pipelines without traditional excavation methods. ASOE involves using liners or other rehabilitation methods that provide enough support to ensure the pipeline continues to function safely and efficiently. This is done without requiring the liner to bear the entire structural load, thereby allowing the existing pipeline to continue playing a significant role in the system's integrity. This approach can be particularly useful in situations where the existing pipeline has some remaining structural value but needs reinforcement to handle specific operational demands or environmental conditions. Last month we spoke about our pipeline construction Pre-Planning and Proposal Stage. This month, we're focusing on the Execution Stage, where we take everything we prepared and put it into action. This is often the busiest Stage in any project, with many factors to consider and implement, including: ➡️ Development, submission, and adoption of project-specific planning ➡️ Temporary/permanent access and crossing construction ➡️ Topsoil removal and sequestration ➡️ Water channel management ➡️ Hauling, stringing, bending, gauging, welding, and coating of all pipe This frequently has to take place over hundreds of kilometres of land. HDD stands for Horizontal Directional Drilling, which is a trenchless construction method used to install underground pipelines, cables, and conduits with minimal disruption to the surface. It is commonly used in projects where traditional excavation would be impractical, such as beneath rivers, roads, or urban areas. Key Features of HDD: 1. Trenchless Technology: No open excavation, minimizing environmental and surface disruption. 2. Precision: Allows for precise placement of underground utilities along predetermined paths. 3. Flexibility: Suitable for various terrains, including rocky and soft soil conditions. HDD Process: 1. Pilot Hole Drilling: A small-diameter hole is drilled along the desired path using a drill head guided by a tracking system. 2. Hole Enlargement: The pilot hole is enlarged using reamers to accommodate the desired pipe or conduit size, 3. Pipe Pullback: The utility (pipe or cable) is pulled through the enlarged hole to complete the installation. Applications: Installation of gas, oil, and water pipelines, Telecommunications and electrical conduits, Environmental remediation River crossings and wetland installations HDD is highly valued for its efficiency, environmental benefits, and ability to overcome obstacles in challenging locations.
