🧘🏽♀️🧠 It's Mental Health Week in Canada! Would you like to be a champion for mental health in our schools? 🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♂️🏅👏🏽 🔦 I'd like to shine a spotlight on Common Compass, an inspiring charitable organisation. They're on a mission to ensure all students can navigate their formative years with the support they need to thrive emotionally, socially, and mentally. This is especially important after the COVID pandemic and with polarisation and eco-anxiety on the rise. 👩🏽🔬 Common Compass' programs are evidence-based, informed by research in psychology, social work and education about the key contributors of pro-social behaviour. With an amazing team of facilitators from diverse backgrounds, they partner with schools and school boards on programs for K-12 students, tailored to the needs of each school community. This includes: 🤝 Empowering young people to create safe spaces in their classrooms, social circles and online, 💝 Helping create a school climate that is safe, empathic and engaging, and 🔧 Providing workshops for students, parents and educators on mental health tools. Since it was established 10 years ago, Common Compass has worked with 8 school boards and 11,000 students, educators and parents. They are also a proud partner of Canadian Mental Health Association's BounceBack Ontario program for teens. Oh and did I mention Common Compass was co-founded and is directed by my dear friend Leisha Zamecnik, MSW, RSW? 🤩 If you are in a position to contribute financially to their incredible work in honour of Mental Health Week, please visit the link below and share what you can. I know from experience in the nonprofit sector that recurring monthly donations of any size are particularly appreciated and would enable the team to plan ahead and reach more students through their innovative programming. Not in a position to contribute financially at the moment? No worries - share the link with your networks! Every little bit helps and you never know what kind of ripple effect your support might have. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthweek #psychology #youth #education #fundraising #womenleaders

In the US each year, 1 in 6 youth under the age of 17 will experience a mental health disorder, and 75% of all lifetime mental health conditions present before the age of 24. Identifying symptoms and seeking treatment early can mitigate the negative impact of mental health conditions. However, the majority of the US faces a shortage of child and teen psychiatrists; only about 14 providers are available per 100,000 children. And, with suicide ranking as the 2nd leading cause of death for children ages 10-14, the situation is dire. So we had to ask: What are the best charities for youth mental health? 👇 https://lnkd.in/ds3wZ6a8 Child Mind Institute, Mental Health America, The Jed Foundation (JED), Active Minds, Inc., NAMI, Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (BBRF), Girls Inc., The Home for Little Wanderers, Action for Healthy Kids #charitysupport #youth #mentalhealth #youthsupport #depressionawareness

Meet Tongle (📍- Malaysia 🇲🇾) Kindness in Community Fund grantee, Tongle, is dedicated to promoting mental health well-being among youth. Its mission is to create a supportive environment where young people can access the mental health resources they need to thrive. Central to this mission are two key programs: Youth Mental Health Workshops and the Listener App. The Youth Mental Health workshops provide young people with essential skills and knowledge to manage their mental well-being, fostering resilience and emotional intelligence. These workshops cover a range of topics, including to train them as qualified listeners. The Listener App is an innovative peer support platform that is accessible 24/7 globally where trained youth volunteers, known as listeners, offer mental health support to users. These listeners undergo rigorous training to ensure they can provide empathetic and effective support, reinforcing the concept of peer support as a powerful tool for mental health. “Support from the Kindness in Community Fund has been instrumental in expanding these programs. This funding has enabled Tongle to train more youth listeners, enhance the workshop curriculum, and increase the reach of the Listener App, ultimately making mental health resources more accessible to a broader audience and creating a more supportive community for youth.” Learn more about their work supported by the Kindness in Community Fund and how you can get involved: https://lnkd.in/edmX6pjg Cotton On Group + Cotton On Foundation 💛💜

‘Would you treat me differently because I’m Autistic?’ I had a young person ask me this… It was the first time I’d met him, a month into my job. ‘Would you treat ME differently?’ I answered. He stood. He smiled. ‘You understand me?’ Through my answer alone, we shared a moment of validation, of understanding. I’m honoured to share that care broader as a charity in our halow project team, supporting young adults across Surrey to live their best life. And through that, to my inner child who asks the same question: how would that label have changed things for me? I share and act on enthusiasm to be proactive, when supporting others and myself. What the young persons reaction meant to me - his smile, our validation - what could that mean to someone else? Just to smile? I couldn’t be prouder to have a vocation in social care. Through my volunteering with The Green Hub Project for Teens and Mind, to my SEN apprenticeship with Inspire ATA, my advocacy, and now my new role as Project Worker at the Halow. Through my journey - the failures and support - for my own Social Emotional Mental Health💚; So yes. Treat differently: treat better. But not better THAN; raise your efforts for equity, support and empower. Make a difference, be proactive - not reactive. Even if it’s just a smile 😊🌻 ____ Photo of me🧸 ____ ‘70–80% of autistic children and adults experience or have experienced mental health problems in their lifetime. StrongMinds, a DRK Foundation portfolio organization, treats women and adolescents with depression in low-income, sub-Saharan African communities. Leveraging group interpersonal therapy, StrongMinds has provided treatment to over 600,000 individuals, with 80% of their patients remaining depression-free six months after therapy. Because of their proven impact, StrongMinds is expanding to the United States and recently launched in New Jersey to address the growing youth mental health crisis. Catalyzed by a grant from Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, StrongMinds America is providing mental health screenings, workshops, presentations, and resources to youth in under-resourced communities to help them identify signs and symptoms of mental health concerns. So far, in 2024, StrongMinds America has connected 500 youth in New Jersey to mental health support. Their long-term goal is to fundamentally increase access to mental health services in all 50 states. “This grant from Horizon has enabled StrongMinds America to challenge stigma and misconceptions about mental health that keep people from reengaging with services they need. Our goal has always been to remove barriers to care in communities we serve, and this funding is crucial in achieving this goal,” says Sean Mayberry, founder and CEO of StrongMinds, about their recent support. This is a great way to begin to address the youth mental health crisis. "Public-private partnership launches Youth Mental Health Corps May 20, 2024 - According to AmeriCorps, one in three high school students report persistent feelings of hopelessness. Approximately 122 million people live in a mental health professional shortage area, where there is a shortage of more than 6,000 practitioners, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. The Youth Mental Health Corps aims to help teenagers access critical mental health resources and bolster the mental health workforce. Other partners include America’s Service Commissions, America Forward, and the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. The Schultz Family Foundation and Pinterest, which worked together to establish the initiative, will provide financial support to participating state service commissions to design and adapt the initiative to meet local needs, including providing training and credentials to AmeriCorps members. Hundreds of AmeriCorps members will be deployed in (11 states) Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, and Texas starting in September 2024. Seven other states—California, Iowa, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, and Utah—have received planning grants and intend to launch their own Corps in the fall of 2025. “National service is a win-win for addressing the teen mental-health crisis because it allows young adults to support each other peer-to-peer while gaining valuable skills and experience, getting paid and earning a credential,” said Schultz Family Foundation co-founder and chair Sheri Kersch Schultz. “The Youth Mental Health Corps demonstrates the power of philanthropy, business, government and non-profits partnering to create innovative solutions to critical national challenges.” #MentalHealthAwareness

"I realized that this was not an isolated incident. In fact, the Mental Health Commission of Canada reports that 39% of Ontario high-school students show a moderate-to-serious level of psychological distress." This is a great initiative through the PTERYX Foundation, a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the well-being of Indigenous and minority youth. Children's Mental Health Week 2024 will take place from 5–11 February 2024. This year's theme is 'My Voice Matters'. This week is run by children's mental health charity Place2Be My Voice Matters is about empowering children and young people by providing them with the tools they need to express themselves. The Lancaster Model is proud to support this initiative, which aligns so well with our vision that every child or young person has the opportunity to have their health needs assessed and to ask for information, help, and support when they need it- to have a voice and be listened to. Having been developed over many years, being evidence and research-based, The Lancaster Model (TLM) offers an online Health Needs Assessment Tool (questionnaire) provided by our trusted technology Partner Aire Innovate, that enables children, young people, and their families the opportunity to have their health and well-being assessed and reviewed by their local Specialist Community Health Nurses and health teams. The anonymised public health data gathered via the Portal shows how important it is to understand the wider perspective as early as possible. Currently, it is showing that for children at school entry age ( 4-5yrs), Borderline and Abnormal Emotional Health difficulties has increased by 9% over the last 7 years. In 2017/18 the total school entry children ( where the area uses TLM) who had difficulties was 10% but the current school year so far shows this at 19% The stats for Year 6 children ( 10-11 yrs) have increased by 8% over the last 7 years with the current year showing a rate of 30% so far. There is also a noticeable trend for Mid Teen young people in 2023/24 for those who are answering the Question "Do you usually look forward to your day ahead?" the highest numbers answering "NO" identifying as Non-binary or other ( not identifying as male or female). To be able to identify a potential problem ahead before that child "gets into the fire" is crucial to the long-term outcomes for that individual.#prevention

#QuestionForTheGroup How might you speed access to mental health services? This case study will inspire parents, doctors, teachers and mental health administrators. John Brooker converses with Natasha Adams, Gill North, and Sarah Charlton, who work at Learning Space. This charity uses Solution Focus to improve the emotional well-being of neurodiverse children in Surrey, England. In this audio, introduced by Luke Goldie-Mcsorley, they explain how they use Solution Focus to help parents of neurodiverse children quickly obtain the support the family needs. Their Solution Focused triage process provides support faster, sometimes within days. Their solution-focused, child-centred counselling approach allows the child and parents to be heard and increases optimism. As well as improving the referral process, the team have reduced the amount of one-to-one care needed; sometimes, the triage session can be enough. Listen to or download the audio from Solution Focus in Organisation’s InterAction Collection and help spread this great story so that more people can access the mental health services they need, faster. https://lnkd.in/e8XtHywt #mentalhealth #neurodiversity .
