When and how did "binge-watching" enter our dictionary? It's been around a decade, and it all started not with Netflix or Amazon Prime, but with YouTube. A clever PM understood that laziness is a deeply ingrained thing for humans. So how about automatically playing the next video? To prevent it, you'd have to take action and stop it, which is a very high-friction activity. Most people wouldn't make the effort and just continue watching. The insight was (unfortunately) quite accurate, and sent YouTube's numbers to the moon. All other platforms followed suit, which gave rise to the binge-watching culture that has taken over most people's lives! I’m going to borrow Bloomberg's Matthew Boyle “read the room” statement below. Don’t pitch a national tech reporter your culture story when there's a major tech outage. Be aware of the world around you. You don’t want to come across as insensitive and out of touch sharing a founder’s story when there is breaking news at hand. If there’s an organic way you can trendjack your brand into the mix, by all means, do it. The key word is organic. If you feel you’re forcing the issue, you probably are. Our Pitching-Updates Slack channel helps the team read the room – with breaking news flags, opportunities for trendjacking, watchouts, and more Timing is everything when pitching media. Don’t be that person who missed the memo. #publicrelations #strategy #media #storytelling #mediarelations
