April fools day! There is widespread debate as to the origin of today, but one thing we can all agree on, and that is we need to to be more critical of new information-especially on April 1st. Remember that time Taco Bell said they bought the Liberty Bell and was going to change the name to the Taco Liberty Bell? Why do we feel the need to try and “fool” someone anyway? Now I still like to have fun, but #salesprofessionals if you are trying to fool a customer you are in for a rude awakening! Buyers are more informed, and smarter, than they have ever been, and I haven't found one that forgets when a sales rep tries to mislead them. I recently took a chance on a sincere salesperson and signed up for the company's low-priced service. Sad to say, even though I trusted this salesperson's authenticity, the quality of his team was another thing altogether. It reminded me of the adage "when we pay peanuts, we'd always get monkeys." But should it? Which is the chicken and which the egg - the low quality 𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 the low price or the low price 𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 the low quality? I often hear stall owners at hawker centres react to complaints from customers with, "You want good service, go to a restaurant!" So, is it universally accepted that if you want cheap, you must be prepared to forgo quality, service or dare I say, decent human dignity? Do we determine the quality (and effectiveness) of everything solely on its price tag? Does expensive always mean good and cheap always bad? Does this also apply to our choices of school, medical service, and potential life partner? It is a shame that we can't give our best all the time because of how proud we are of ourselves.

Who is Dani Ruiz? Since joining Evans Delivery Dallas, Dani Ruiz has been leading the charge to orchestrate our customers' Houston drayage needs. What’s your role at the company, and how would you explain it to a 5-year-old? In simplest terms, I help people. Depending on whom you ask, I’m pretty nosy or curious, but I like a challenge and the opportunity to "figure things out." Most of all, I enjoy helping people. Officially, I work on the Houston side of our drayage business and handle every aspect of our process. Who inspires you most at work and why? Our owner, Creighton Kent, inspires me the most at work; he runs circles around everyone. He is very intelligent and analytical and has a process for everything. I recall a conversation we had over the phone while my son and I were experimenting with root beer floats. Mr. Kent described his process of making the perfect root beer float. If you like floats, I suggest giving Mr. Kent a call. Best of all, Mr. Kent is very patient and loyal and enjoys helping people succeed. I admire those traits. What’s the most exciting project you have worked on recently, and what made it memorable for you? The most recent project that I enjoyed working on was developing a service-failure tracking system to analyze our biggest obstacles and develop a process to manage them. I had never done that before, but as I mentioned, I like to figure things out. Describe your ideal weekend activity to recharge. I consider myself pretty boring, but spending time with my wife and son helps me recharge. If possible, I like to work out, and if I can get in an extra hour of sleep, I consider that a great weekend. What is one unexpected talent or hidden skill you possess? I’m not a great cook, and I was grateful for sandwiches and TV dinners back in my single days, but my wife and son love it when I cook beef ribs at home. I am not a pro by any means, but I have figured out some little things that make a huge difference.

From time to time, our amazing customers come up with some off-the-wall responses for objections and I’m 100% here for it! Last week was no different. Enter Devon Perry with this gem: “You can buy a cheaper pizza but then you’d have to eat it” The rooms reaction? Laughter and curiosity. What a freakin line! - if they really care about value, this line sets you up to remind them - the buyer can now easily imagine taking a bite of a crappy, perhaps still frozen pizza - it’s fun! "EAT THIS CORNDOG!" A colleague reminded me of this conversation we had many years ago. He was someone that was known as somewhat of a maverick for doing things his own way. One of our tasks was cooking corndogs (like I said, this was many years ago). But he didn't cook them according to the listed instructions. When our manager berated him for not following instructions, he promptly cooked one corndog according to the instructions and told the manager, "Eat this corndog." The manager couldn't finish a single bite. The instructions we were using created a sub-par product. The manager didn't know because he had never tried it. But the maverick coworker did. I've often said (this is how we remembered the conversation), one of the easiest ways to improve the experience for your customers is to shop yourself. Go through everything as your customer would, so you can see what it's like. You can only grill so many fish at one time... A premise I often share with my team when they are feeling overwhelmed or have too many things on their plate. It's easy to assume you just need to move faster. But often times there is a precise amount of output that can be achieved before quality is compromised. And if quality is your priority, then this is really important. I remember being on the grill station at Oceana, and the grill would be filled with Branzino, and tickets just kept coming in. The pick up was pretty simple. An artichoke barigoule warmed with garlic confit, finished w/ baby spinach and lemon. It was a popular dish, and I tried to speed up the process. But I quickly realized; I could only comfortably fit 15 Branzino, skin-down, on the grill at any given time before it began to crowd and the fish would begin to steam a bit, causing the skin to not get as crispy as it should. The lesson: We all have a throughput constraint. You can try and improve the throughput constraint with more infrastructure, but you typically can not simply increase throughput and expect the same results. If you have 10 initiatives on your to-do list. Stop and prioritize. How many can you accomplish at once? Prioritize what's most important, and move the rest aside. Pushing most of the other work off most often has zero reflection on your capability to execute.
