Every week, one of my favourite tasks at the Ethical Property Foundation is checking the client enquiries to our free Ask a Property Expert service. I am always struck by the vivid snapshot it gives of our diverse and glorious voluntary sector. Just since 1st December, we have helped refugee charities, after-school clubs, faith groups, cricket clubs, allotment and choral societies, conservation and heritage charities, community centres, community theatres, village halls, and small voluntary groups supporting every possible cause, and based in every borough, county, region, nook and cranny of this island. This is a free service for voluntary organisations, run by our team of expert chartered surveyors. Legal, planning, valuation and VAT enquiries are passed on to our brilliant Register of Property Professionals, who generously provide further advice, pro bono and at a charity rate.  Of course, the service is not really free because it must be professionally administered, managed and insured. The word ‘unique’ is overused these days, but the Ethical Property Foundation does run the ONLY free property advice service in the UK serving our voluntary sector, irrespective of cause and community. We need more support to keep this going. Huge thanks to City Bridge Foundation for their support for London, but there are a lot of groups needing help everywhere else. 3,437.32 km and 629 Hours Later... At the beginning of 2024, we set out with a big vision: to walk from Perth to Sydney as part of a charity initiative. It was meant to be a journey fueled by purpose, one that would test our endurance while raising awareness for our charities campaign on preventing anxiety online. We joke now, but it kind of gave us anxiety with the lack of response that came from most companies. For the first four months, we were fueled by pure grit, clocking in an average of 16 kilometers a day. Sending emails, hunting PR to cover the story or trying to secure transport and everything else you need to walk across the country. Yet, like many ambitious projects, our walk encountered one of the biggest hurdles—securing funding and sponsorships. Despite countless hours spent reaching out, our replies dwindled, and eventually, we ran out of runway. But what we didn’t run out of was our love for walking. So we continued. Day after day, challenge after challenge, each step became a testament to the power of resilience. In 2024, we've walked a total of 3,437.32 kilometers, with over 629 hours of walking time. While we haven’t yet secured the support needed to complete our original charity journey, we are proud to be close to achieving our goal of crossing the equivalent distance from Perth to Sydney. Is it too early to mention Christmas? We are excited to be participating in The Big Give Christmas Challenge again this year. A national fundraising campaign where money raised is match funded which doubles your impact! For our Big Give Christmas Appeal 2025 we are ‘Dreaming of a Whitelee Christmas’. Covering over 15km2, Whitelee Moor is one of Britain's most important upland nature reserves, a site of European conservation importance and NWT’s largest reserve. To help Whitelee reach its full potential as a spectacular haven for wildlife we are taking part in The Big Give Christmas Challenge, a national fundraising campaign. The first part of this campaign is to raise match funding. We have just two weeks to raise £5,000 match funding from our generous supporters.  Match funding raised will be used during appeal week, 3rd-10th December 2024 to match public donations, doubling the impact of your gift. Campaign to save Scotland's mountain paths raises £218,000 in first year. The initial stage of the campaign is focused on repairing 3.2km of badly eroded path on An Teallach, one of Scotland’s most iconic mountains. Path contractors from Cairngorm Wilderness Contracts (CWC) have so far completed 340m of path building and maintenance work on the mountain, funded by the campaign and supported by a team of enthusiastic path maintenance volunteers. It’s Up to Us, a joint campaign from Mountaineering Scotland and the Outdoor Access Trust for Scotland (OATS), is urging all those who love being out in the hills and care about the mountain paths they use to step up with a small donation towards the £300k target. The campaign is also calling on the Government to help develop a sustainable funding model for building and maintenance work across Scotland’s upland path network to ensure it is kept fit for purpose for future generations to enjoy. Walking tourism is estimated to be worth around 1.6 billion per year to the Scottish economy. However, there is no government funding for path work on privately owned land [83% of paths in Scotland] that is not in the two national parks or NGO estates. Post-Brexit, EU funding, previously accessible to private landowners, has been lost and not replaced. Huws Gray Group announces charity partnerships with Mates in Mind and CRASH for 2025 One of the UK's leading independent builders’ merchants has joined forces with two of the nation's most respected charities in the construction industry. Huws Gray Group has secured two-year partnerships with Mates in Mind and CRASH and is focused on helping raise awareness of mental health issues and homelessness. The collaboration will also see the company provide resources, products and general support to vital construction schemes which care for the homeless and people of all ages with life-limiting illnesses. THE PEAK DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK COMMUNITY NATURE FUND Parish Councils, Community Interest Companies (CICs), registered charities and constituted voluntary groups can apply for a capital grant of between £500 and £5,000 for community projects within the Peak District National Park that create, improve or increase space for nature, such as community orchards, planting trees, wildflower meadows, creating ponds or other nature projects. Grants can be used for landscape features (such as trees and ponds), built items (for example, fencing) and equipment and tools to deliver the project outcomes. It will not fund organisational costs, work already undertaken, recoverable VAT or costs associated with fulfilling a statutory obligation or planning consent. Applicants must either be the landowner or be able to show the landowner’s permission for their project. The deadlines for applications in 2025 are: (1) Thursday 30th January; (2) Wednesday 30th April; and (3) Tuesday 30th September.
