Longest-serving & 1st woman @NATO Spokesperson (2010-2023), Distinguished Fellow @RoyalUnitedServicesInstitute, Senior Adviser @EuropeanPolicyCentre, ex @BBC correspondent
Glad to meet again with this talented and powerful network in NATO - the Alumni of the #NATO Executive Development Programme. Ahead of the Washington summit in July, we spoke about the challenges of today and tomorrow and their role in keeping the alliance fit for the future. I shared some of my personal reflections: 🗣️Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself, but also your bosses. You have agency. I’m forever grateful to Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg for listening to my professional advice whenever I had to tell him something he may not have liked. The best leaders listen with humility, create commitment, and accept that they too can make mistakes - they don’t just expect people to follow, or break things just because they can. 🤝 Genuine teamwork is key. I am so proud of everyone in my amazing press & media team at NATO and what we have achieved together. Grow as a person, a professional and as a team. Network across your organisation and beyond. The trust you create in good times will make you more resilient in bad times - and those times will come. The personal ties you’ve forged will help you connect the dots of what you do with the broader aims of the organisation, help put things into perspective and bring fresh perspectives. 🌎 There is a world outside NATO - yes, really 😉 I have now made my transition to the world of think-tank and academia. It’s actually been easier than leaving the BBC 14 years ago, and I’m much busier than I thought. It’s important to stay engaged in the conversation on defence and security at this existential moment. So act as a spokesperson for NATO with your family and friends, understand their hopes and anxieties in this dangerous world, and when/if the time comes, use what you’ve learnt beyond NATO. You’ll do great! 🙏 for the invitation & best of luck ✌️ #development #teamwork #listening #leadership #career Mircea Geoana Carlo M Borghini (he/him) Irina Novakova Spela Kranjc Nuno Quaresma Dylan P. 🚨 **Strengthening U.S.-Israel Ties on the Ground Right Now** 🚨 We are currently running a crucial program with a delegation of retired American generals and admirals on the ground in Israel. Despite Israel's current multi-front battle and heavy unfair scrutiny, these U.S. leaders, many accompanied by their spouses, have chosen to go and see firsthand the resilience of this country. This mission is pivotal in building and reinforcing the essential ties between our great allies. This is the impactful work of Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA). JINSA’s Generals and Admirals (G&A) Program, with over 40 years of trps, educates recently retired U.S. generals and admirals about Israel’s unique security challenges and the importance of a strong U.S.-Israel relationship for America's national security. Participants meet with top Israeli leaders, visit key strategic sites, and often engage in policy initiatives that strengthen U.S. national security and the U.S.-Israel security relationship through JINSA’s Center for Defense and Strategy. This impactful work underscores JINSA's dedication to fostering enduring connections and advancing critical policy initiatives that enhance the security and strategic cooperation between the U.S. and Israel. #JINSA #USIsrael #NationalSecurity #MilitaryLeadership #StrategicPartnerships

𝑭𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒉 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒊𝒈𝒏 𝑳𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑻𝒆𝒂𝒎 𝑫𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒏 I happened upon Brian "Ponch" Rivera's article a few days ago, "Redefining Management: Lessons from the Battlefield", which in turn quoted a contribution by Steve Denning, fresh from the last edition of the excellent Global Peter Drucker Forum (the Davos of Project Management), about the latter's initiative to re-frame the concept of management over the next 5 years, and how the forum could learn a great deal from the military milieu, both European and American, and its way of managing the battlefield, the quintessence of uncertainty. I will therefore let you read the excellent article: https://lnkd.in/dzkpH_G9 I have always appreciated and looked with respect upon the management skills of the armed forces. Particularly since I was a boy, I have read far and wide about the famous Légion étrangère (Paul Bonnecarrère above all). The legion of the damned, the soldier who goes where he dies, a far cry from the romantic cinematic counterpart of the cooperian Beau Geste. No wonder the legion is invited to the best french grandes écoles to hold workshops on leadership and team management. So I want to tell you a very interesting anecdote about how the mixed language battalions came into being: We are in the middle of the Carlist war, and the king of France decides to transfer the battalions of legionnaires from Algeria and assign them to the army of Isabel II. The year is 1845. Until then, the battalions had been composed on a 𝐠𝐞𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐬, which ensured an excellent amalgamation from the outset, and a natural sense of belonging, which, although positive on a local level, was very detrimental to the Legion's 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲, creating conflicts between different nationalities, and very often causing stalemates dictated by language misunderstandings. Furthermore, it became a problem (conflict of interest, almost) if, for example, the first and second battalions, made up of Germans, had to face an Austrian or Prussian unit. In the agile world we are all aware of this, a team that is completely focused on the 𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧, particularly bonded, but detached from the squad within which it operates and therefore disinterested in the 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 is very often counterproductive.
