Reentering the Fray I am pleased to announce that I have joined the newly formed global consulting agency, Nicholas Scibetta & Associates https://lnkd.in/em4RhdNs. As a strategic advisor, I welcome the opportunity to bring my expertise and decades of experience in communications and reputation management, to serving clients, particularly in the area of higher education.   After retiring from a three-decade career of leading public relations for a major research university, I was asked why I want to enter the fray again, especially given the current turmoil on university campuses.    It’s for the very reason I chose to devote much of my career to university public relations:    I believe in the academic and research missions of higher education institutions. I believe that what happens every day on our university campuses can benefit society locally, nationally, and globally. I watched generations of students grow personally and professionally as a result of their education, inside and outside of the classroom. We need these future leaders.   Working on behalf of a university gave my life greater purpose and meaning. I am guessing this is why many of my fellow communications professionals are committed to serving higher education. They also are believers.    The academic year may be over, but campus tensions remain, which will likely be exacerbated by the Presidential election and its aftermath. But the challenges faced by higher education go far beyond current controversies. Americans confidence in higher education has declined sharply in recent years https://lnkd.in/eps6Fmrb and its value and very purpose questioned by multiple stakeholders.    University leaders need to take the next few months to reestablish trust among community members. University communities must work together to clarify policies and procedures regarding speech and civil protests in advance of the new academic year.   Attention must be devoted to internal audiences–––this is the critical lesson I learned from leading Ebola communications at Emory University. We must have the understanding and support of our internal community in establishing credibility and trust among all stakeholders. Great to spend some time with Mark Barton over the last couple of days as he shared his valuable insights on effective communications, and achieving impactful media coverage. Three takeaways: 👑Communication is king. Seems obvious for comms, right? But when you see it done well - either written or spoken - it can take your message to new levels, even if you find your area of expertise being stretched (therefore helping you navigate some tricky spots) 🤝It’s about relationships. Instead of throwing your message at a wall and seeing what sticks, build those key valuable contacts that help execute comms on a strategic level. 💡Embrace change. It’s the only way to compete effectively in such a crowded, fast-paced, digital communications space. I could go on, but sometimes less is more (extra tip, there…)
