In recent years, #cyber criminals have had large scale events like the Olympic Games in their sights because of their profile and relative complexity so the fact that the French national museum network's IT system, which includes roughly 40 museums, was hit with a "ransomware attack" comes as no surprise.
Cyber criminals focus on large and complex events because they can target ticketing systems and various support services platforms which are all commercially and operationally sensitive and critical.
Along with the risk to safety of participants and spectators and the potential financial loss, events like the Olympics also amplify the reputational impact that cyber breaches can have.
Events are complex with countless inter-connect and interrelated systems and dependencies, including digital communications networks at the events, tourism and travel components including ticketing and transport networks, not to mention the financial networks under-pinning the games.
With such a wide array of targets, cyber criminals can use the full arsenal of threats, including ransomware and data theft, phishing attacks on participants, customers, or the thousands of workers and volunteers that have access to different systems to install malware, and denial-of-service attacks on the many different system touchpoints used throughout the events.
There is a lesson here for large events companies, stadium operators, and conference organisers – large and complex endeavours require a coordinated, robust and comprehensive cybersecurity preparedness plan and defined, resourced, and up-to-date crisis response procedures.
FTI Consulting has advised organisations across all sectors and geographies to assist them to successfully prepare for incidents involving the threats outlined above, nation-state and large-scale incidents, double-extortion ransomware attacks, and delivered preparedness programs designed to protect critical infrastructure. We lead deep, wide-ranging organisational reviews in order to understand the organization’s current structure, procedures, strengths, and opportunities for adjustment which inform the creation of custom Cybersecurity #Crisis Management Plan. We then work closely with organisations to test, train, and drill internal teams and position the organization to navigate and respond to cybersecurity incidents and protect stakeholder relationships, mitigate legal risk, and reduce business impact.
When the worst happens, the FTI #Cybersecurity team can be available to deploy a team to support the development and implementation of an incident response communications strategy. We partner with external counsel, forensic investigators, cyber insurers, and internal teams to ensure consistent and appropriate stakeholder communications across the board and throughout an incident.
