Gender bias does not belong in the building and construction industry (or any industry for that matter). Like Tahlia, I've experienced similar appalling behaviour during my time in the industry. I didn't speak up for fear of becoming more of a target on site, or losing my job, but I hope I can help make a positive change in the future. Nothing changes if we don't talk about these issues that exist in the workplace, as difficult as it is to speak about it and to hear it. The support that exists for women and minorities in the industry is a promising start, but we need to target the source of the problem and educate the 'majorities' on site, as well as trade school providers who spend time with apprentices in their initial (and often vulnerable) stage of their career. These majorities have the potential to create a positive, accepting and inclusive culture on site, and to ensure we retain workers in our industry. Let's highlight the need for change and acceptance. The statistics on sexual harassment in construction paint a grim picture, but they only tell part of the story. The true impact on victims goes far beyond numbers, affecting their mental and physical well-being, career progression, and trust in the industry. The emotional scars can be deep, leading to anxiety, depression, and even post-traumatic stress disorder. Victims may experience a decline in productivity, job satisfaction, and ultimately, leave the industry altogether. This not only harms individuals but also weakens the construction workforce and hinders its potential. We must recognize the human cost of sexual harassment and prioritize creating a culture where everyone feels safe, respected, and empowered to contribute. This means actively listening to victims' experiences, providing support services, and advocating for systemic change. Let's stand up for the women and men who build our cities. Interesting observation: I met up with two different excavating contractors over the past week. I had never met either gentleman before and wanted them to look at a potential project, that was a bit hard to find. I asked them if they wanted to ride with me or follow me. Both of them chose to ride with me, not knowing me, not knowing where we were going. Want a perfect example of the differences in the sexes in construction? I would NEVER do that. I think women are generally more concerned about their safety and have a built-in fear about those situations. Construction is sexist. Construction is dangerous. Construction needs to modernise. Construction is behind other industries. Construction is running out of skilled workers... There's a hell of a lot of negativity surrounding the construction industry. As time moves on, it's easy to overlook the beauty. Construction is legacy. For all those who get to say: "I built that". We're kicking off #WomenInConstructionWeek by highlighting Alli Henry and her story! What role did you start in and what’s your current role? I started out as a Fireproofing Laborer and I’m currently a Project Manager for the Columbus region. What do you wish you would have known when starting out in construction? There isn’t a “correct” route to take in the industry. You’re capable of being successful no matter where , what trade or position you’re in. What do you like most about working in construction? I like the challenge and various parts that come with making the field’s job easier. What advice do you have for women interested in the construction field? If you’re thinking about construction—do it. You belong in this industry just as much as everyone else. Talent is everywhere.
