The Tahoe region has held federal attention since the Clinton Administration. However, a major revenue stream from Capitol Hill could run dry as soon as this fall. The latest issue of Tahoe In Depth, Tahoe’s environmental newspaper, explores the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act and the benefits it would bring should the House choose to reauthorize it (it's already been reauthorized by the Senate). Interesting article on how one state is responding to the Supreme Court’s Sackett decision which narrowed the scope of federal jurisdiction wetlands. We can expect more wetlands policy to be driven at the state and local level for years to come.

The first Annual Report from California’s Multibenefit Land Repurposing Program came out this week and it’s exciting to see growing capacity and collaboration to support water sustainability in California. MLRP brings needed funds to high-priority and critically overdrafted basins, enhancing resilience by repurposing the least-viable agricultural lands in ways that support local needs including protecting communities and the environment.

California court rules that groundwater pumping should not harm rivers and fish Environmental groups, led by the California Coastkeeper Alliance and Russian Riverkeeper, won a crucial court case requiring Sonoma County to reassess groundwater well permits to protect fish habitats in the Russian River. This landmark decision, announced on August 21, 2024, underscores the need to manage groundwater and surface water resources together. The ruling could set a precedent across California and the U.S., ensuring that public trust resources like fish habitats are not compromised by excessive groundwater pumping. Let us get inspired and act to mainstream this rule globally through policy change and, where needed litigation. #BLM’s final Public Lands Rule, which defines conservation as a “use” of public land, reflects the Biden Administration’s climate agenda and a new approach to restore federal lands. #EnvironmentalLaw attorney Murray Feldman spoke with Bloomberg Law about the prospects for legal challenges, saying, “It’s unclear how courts will respond to these challenges, especially with judges focusing on how closely regulations hew to the strict language of the law,” adding, “The test here will be if BLM’s rule goes too far or stays within statutory constraints under FLPMA and the range of permissible agency discretion.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gtQiDMHQ

🚨 TAKE ACTION: #SB541 is currently on Governor #TonyEvers ' desk, and we need your help in urging him to VETO this harmful legislation that would impact accessibility to the waters and shorelines that belong to ALL OF US. This bill allows for conversion of some public trust shorelands to private ownership and private use. These lands belong to the public. When public rights are not upheld, water resources become targets for high-end private developments that only cater to and are accessible by the small segment of #Wisconsinites who can afford to live on the #waterfront or drink and dine at high-priced establishments. Therefore, upholding the public trust is an environmental justice issue, because it preserves equitable access to the waters of the state. Learn more and send an email to Gov. Evers >> https://buff.ly/3VMGLNP
