“Maps are like campfires — everyone gathers around them, because they allow people to understand complex issues at a glance and find agreement about how to help the land.” - Sonoma Ecology Center Last week several #TeamTRPA staff members gathered in San Diego alongside other Geographic Information Systems (GIS) specialists. GIS is an essential tool in TRPA's work that helps break down complex data into a visual format that is easy for the public, stakeholders, and decision makers to understand.

UPDATE: The UKCEH Land Cover Maps for 2022 and 2023 have been released. These additions to our LCM series describe the physical material on the surface of the country, using high-resolution satellite imagery. Discover our LCM data collection: https://lnkd.in/g9cQW8x8 #LandCover #GIS #RemoteSensing
I’m delighted to announce the latest two releases in the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology Land Cover Map series, Land Cover Map 2022 (LCM2022) and Land Cover Map 2023 (LCM2023). Produced by classifying satellite images from the respective years, each new LCM comprises a suite of geospatial datasets describing the UK land surface in both raster and vector formats, and at a range of spatial resolutions. You can download the LCM data for Great Britain and Northern Ireland from our data catalogue: https://lnkd.in/e9Pbq7Km.

UK Land Cover Map - 2023 update is out. Still needs some deeper translation into UK Habs for eco reports , but good to know for general /regional habitat cover.

This post is for the ecology people. I recommend two R packages for estimating occupancy and abundance with modeling: spAbundance: https://lnkd.in/dzGgu7D8 spOccupancy: https://lnkd.in/dKqY-fhz Both papers include case studies, allowing you to engage with available data to learn the estimation process. You can also apply these techniques to your own data.

Being part of the Thermal Vision Ecology team as their Technical Consultant has really made me realise that if I hadn’t started a career in ecology, I should have gone into this field! The ecology kit we provide to the environmental sector has numerous benefits, but one that got me hooked very early on was the ability to automate the analysis of hrs of thermal footage accurately. Here is a little example for you - 10mins of thermal recording was analysed by the software in approximately 4 mins. 💡If your average bat survey generates 90 mins of footage, rather than watch it all back in realtime, it can be analysed with Research Studio software in approx 36 mins - all whilst you do something else! 💡Then you scroll to the event peaks (see below) and determine whether it is a bat or not. Job done! But that’s not all …. You can draw multiple regions of interest around potential roost features or areas of your target, and the software will run simultaneous analysis on them all! Below is a short clip of a barn surveyed recently, I focused on a beam cavity and drew an ROI around it. The analysis captures both emergence (indicated by the 1st peak on the graph) and also if a bat flies into the ROI, but it doesn’t trigger any another time. We train you fully in use if the kit and the analysis techniques. Do get in touch with us if you want to know more! 🦇 #thermalimaging #thermalvisionresearch #batsurveyanalysis #dataanalysis
