Sarcomas are rare cancers in connective tissues such as fat, blood vessels, and nerves. Sarcoma Awareness Month aims to raise awareness about this disease and its impact. Advocates in Seattle established Sarcoma Awareness Month in November 2007 with support from sarctrials.org. Sarcoma sees 15,000 new cases each year, and those fighting this disease need support to cope with the challenges. Our first Rare Hero is Christine Waggoner – The Crusader! Christine founded Cure GM1 Foundation in honor of her daughter, Iris, who was diagnosed with GM1 gangliosidosis at the age of 5. GM1 is a rare, autosomally inherited genetic disorder that primarily affects children and has many debilitating ramifications. Fueled by Christine’s dedication for finding treatments, Cure GM1 Foundation is the only 501(c)(3) nonprofit entirely dedicated to GM1 gangliosidosis, and its goal is right in the name.
