“IT IS ONE THING TO HAVE A VISION, IT IS ANOTHER TO HAVE THE CAPACITY TO FULFILL IT” These were the resonating words Mr. Aladerun Segun, the farm manager responded with last month at Ilesha when I asked about the establishment of one of the biggest plantation sites I had ever seen. I pondered on the phrase and deduced some instructive truth: 1. The capacity to fulfill a vision is not inherent. 2. Vision flourishes on acquirable abilities: a process where the prowess and resources needed to execute, nurture, and thrive can be acquired with time and diligence. 3. The vision dictates the abilities to be acquired. 4. A vision without the requisite capacity will be frustrated and might eventually fail. These conclusions seemed particularly apt as I reflected on Makaiza Farms, a 600-hectare agro-industry specializing in the oil category of agro-commodities. This agro-industry that halved the city it was situated in, piqued my interest as I witnessed the expertise displayed in maximizing the commercialization of its production processes. The vast hectares of oil palm plantation, whose palm kernels would be harvested to process palm oil, vegetable oil, and palm kernel meal, was truly impressive. This is business indeed! 👂How learning to listen gives agricultural producers more bargaining power 💡 During a recent project in Tanzania I met with Twende Pamoja, a Potato Amcos (farmer cooperative) with more than 200 members in Njombe, part of the southern agricultural belt. Their Amcos mottos is- Anzia sokoni,malizia shambani kwa kipato Zaidi. In English is translated as “start from the market, finalize at the farm for better income”. This is based on a principle they learnt during a farmer and entrepreneurship training program conducted by SNV and EA Foods. By following this principle, the farmers learnt valuable tools that empower them to negotiate from a stronger position with buyers and middlemen. The majority of agricultural produce is bought and consumed in Dar Es Salam- over 8 hour drive from where the supply is produced. This makes it easier for middle men and traders to take advantage of farmers, who don’t pass on price changes in the market to farmers. Many of the Amcos founding members participated in a training program that included learning how supply and demand impacts price. Useful understanding that helps them to negotiate for better prices with their customers. They also learnt the power of unionizing to push farm gate prices up. In a market as sensitive and reactive as Tanzania, having a close ear to what is happening in the market is crucial. By understanding what was happening in the markets, farmers can also make more informed decisions about what to plant for the next harvest. Many farmers I spoke to in the Amcos expressed how learning these concepts have improved their approach to managing their farms in a more commercially sustainable way. THE PUBLIC SPEAKS "As vegetable farmers in Kariamu, we face significant challenges due to the poor condition of our roads, compounded by unfulfilled promises regarding their repair. Situated between three constituencies—Kipipiri, Ol Kalou, and Nyandarua—we often find ourselves neglected as development efforts prioritize more central areas, leaving border regions like ours to suffer. The state of our roads severely impacts our ability to transport our produce to market. Countless crops spoil in the fields due to the logistical hurdles posed by these impassable roads. While there's talk of a proposed road from Kinangop through the Aberdares forest, we believe this solution will only benefit a limited number of farmers. Instead, we propose an alternative route through Kariamu, which would serve a larger number of farmers, including those in our community. This alternative route would provide better access to key markets such as Nakuru and towns in between, enabling us to efficiently deliver our produce and contribute significantly to the local economy. Our 4-year-old avocado plantation in Iringa, Tanzania – we started harvesting mid-August and should be finished end September, missing much of the global, June-July supply “hump”. Target yield of 11 tonnes per hectare this year, eight of which for export. In the Missenyi district of the Kagera region in Tanzania, Mr. Octavian Pastory, a Field Officer with TAPBDS, held a meeting with the Director of JEAA Agro Company. This firm serves as an anchor distributor of mechanization equipment in the district and collaborates with AgriCom to empower youth in agriculture by facilitating access to modern agricultural tools and machinery. Over an extended period, JEAA Agro Company has demonstrated a commitment to advancing agricultural mechanization within the region. Their initiatives include the leasing of various types of equipment, including those used for plowing, weeding, planting, harvesting, and value addition. The objective of this meeting was to establish a defined working relationship with JEAA Agro Company to improve their service delivery and sales by expanding their network of young entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector. This is in alignment with the objectives of the #YEFFA Project implemented by AGRA with the support of the Mastercard Foundation. The project aims to engage a greater number of youth through equipment leasing, involvement in service delivery, equipment maintenance, and training opportunities. TAPBDS is committed to supporting JEAA Agro Company and similar enterprises in building an ecosystem of young market actors who will undertake the mechanization business and extend their services to a broader base of farmers.
