On 22 October, Tairawhiti Whenua (TW) held a field day hosted by our member, Wi Pere Trust Board on their whenua at Otara Station, Whatatutu. The Field Day provided an opportunity for other farms, businesses and Māori incorporations to learn about Wi Pere Trust’s 120 Year Land Optimisation Plan. All members of Tairawhiti Whenua were invited to be involved, allowing members to see and hear partners who have the same moemoeā of advancement and protection of te taiao. Wi Pere Trust’s land optimisation plan also provided members with an example of transforming to a sustainable future. Wi Pere Trust advisors Tim Rhodes, Gavin Sheath, Lachie Grant and Angus McPherson were on hand to present their whakaaro with regard to the land optimisation plan. As part of their korero, they were able to share highlights, challenges and processes that should be considered in the development of any integrated Farm Plans, supporting other members to navigate the complexities that exist over the management of whenua Māori. This field day follows on from the very successful hui held in Ruatoria on 24 September 2024 hosted by Beef + Lamb and Taiao Connect. Both hui were very well attended and received by those members who participated, with at least 80 individuals attending in Ruatoria and 50 at Wi Pere’s Otara Station. TW want to thank Beef and Lamb, Taiao Connect and Wi Pere Trust Board for working with and assisting our members in advancing their growth. “Interest by our members in both events was awesome and provides momentum for those willing to proceed to improve their businesses,” says TW Chair, Alan Haronga. TW also want to thanks its’ members who were able to attend and participate in both events, and we look forward to further opportunities to advance our taiao and businesses through collective impact and collaboration in Tairāwhiti. 💚 #tairawhitiwhenua #maori #whenuamaori

Check Iqbal Affandi’s journey to the Tallo sub-district in coastal Makassar where we see the powerful impact of our clean water project initiatives, Tametotto (a rain-harvesting method) and Terrawater (a water filter). The project was initiated by consortium Makassar Je’ne Tallasa: Celebes Green Project, Kopernik, and Terra Water Indonesia in 2021. Tametotto's success is inspiring more residents to adopt rainwater harvesting. Witnessing the local community accessing clean water amidst challenges highlights the importance of our work. Other than Tamettoto, we are glad to hear the news that our representative saw Terrawater’s installation in many spots like schools or small-medium food and beverage enterprises. However, these two initiatives still have many areas for improvement. Tametotto still uses manual pumping and heavy reliance on the weather, which can limit and slow the process of collecting water, and Terrawater filter takes a relatively long time to filter the water. Experiencing the profound benefits of clean water has motivated the local community to become more aware of its significance in daily life. However, some people are still skeptical and boil Terrawater filtered water before drinking it. This highlights the critical role of education and clear information, which our changemakers at the Celebes Green Project are diligently providing in the project. Further, we also found some encouraging news to share when we visited the local health center (Puskesmas). Recent tests indicate that the water quality remains safe for consumption. What's even more interesting is the data from the health center showing a remarkable improvement in public health. Over the past six months, there have been no reported cases of diarrhea—a stark contrast to the 1-2 cases per week we used to see. Moreover, we also discuss several topics around water access and quality with local governments, BIDANG ESDA BAPPEDA KOTA MAKASSAR, PDAM Kota Makassar, Kecamatan Tallo, and Kelurahan Tallo. With all that interesting news and areas to improve, we can’t wait for further collaborations to advance these initiatives. #WaterTreatment #WaterCrisis #CatalystChangemakersEcosystem #MakassarJeNeTallasa

🤜🤛 Teamwork, creativity, and resilience can transform even the most unlikely spaces into flourishing gardens. 🌱 This is the story of Ratna Setiawati, a 67-year-old farmer from Depok, Indonesia. In 2022, Rikolto launched a project that motivated Ratna and other women to set up a women farmers’ organisation, Sejahtera. Together, they transformed a 400-square-meters piece of wasteland next to a highway into a fertile urban garden. 🌡️This comes with challenges: urban environments are generally several degrees warmer than surrounding rural areas, forming so-called heat islands. Urbanisation in Depok replaces green spaces with buildings that trap heat and block wind, raising temperatures and affecting urban agriculture. But… transforming wastelands into vegetable gardens has also already reduced the average temperature around these urban areas by 0.16°C. 👉 Curious to know more about Ratna, the women of Sejahtera and the urban heat islands initiative? Continue reading: https://lnkd.in/eg2AW_cH ♾️ Last week, we organised the Week for Good Food in Belgium. This was an occasion to spotlight the stories of good food champions like Ratna, who give their everything to make good food a right for everyone, everywhere. Stay tuned for more stories. #goodfood4cities #goodfood4citiesrikolto #sustainablefoodsystems #urbanheatislands #goodfood
