The private markets GP stakes business at Blackstone is one of the best in the business. There is a widely held view that bigger is better and if you’re a small investment firm you might as well throw in the towel, especially as regulatory pressure mounts. Yet, we are seeing a rising trend in wealth managers setting up their own ventures. These individuals appear to be jaded by the impact M&A is having, especially when it comes to client relationships. Kieran Follis, who witnessed the damage a merger gone wrong can do when Barclays bought Gerrard in 2003, is the latest manager to set up his own shop, partnering with P1investment to establish Magellan Research and Investment.
