My Australian heart is singing this morning for Arisa Trew, our 14-year-old gold Australian-Japanese medalist in the coolest sport ever 🛹! And my global heart is rejoicing in the diversity in sports we are seeing, enjoying, and beholding this Olympics. If you haven't noticed the mixed-race athletes in most of the teams, take a moment now to awaken to this consciousness. Diversity in sport is winning. And we know for sure that Diversity in the Workplace wins (McKinsey's research is GOLD). But finding this diversity at the leadership rungs sometimes needs a telescope, and the focus is blurry. STOP talking about hiring and promoting on merit only. It's the age-long massively flawed argument that relies heavily on access and privilege. Unless we actively have bias busters, and inclusion attraction strategies in our talent sourcing and management strategies, we're simply spitting out more of the same. Our global tower of Babel is now more dispersed than ever where talent is concerned. You don't need to speak in tongues to tap this. You just need to add some creativity and increase your inclusive leadership capability. Diversity always wins. Silver with a Hand in His Pocket: Yusuf Dikeç’s Unconventional Path to Success In the world of sports, we often hear about athletes with top-notch gear and endless resources. But Yusuf Dikeç, the Turkish marksman, showed us something extraordinary at the Paris Olympics. With limited gear and a hand in his pocket, he snagged a silver medal. 🥈 Here's what we can learn from his journey 👉 Equipment and resources are only part of the story: Dikeç's story is a testament to when even if you don't have the biggest resources, or the most talented team or even the smartest mind, you can be more than the sum total of your own self. In the event, he competed without specialized lenses, eye cover and ear protection, yet he shot his way to a medal. 👉Focus: If there was one thing that you can really learn from is sometimes, we really need to cut down all the distractions and focus on only the goal. In today's world, there are too many distractions making us less focused and delivering sub optimal results. Always try and block chunks of time rather than constantly switching between multiple tasks. You never know, it may get you a medal :) 👉Be humble and work hard: sometimes, we hype ourselves to the level of craziness, but we all can take a leaf out of Dikeç's story and be humbler and more grounded in life. People see his success today, but don't see the years of hard work that he had put in for that result. Quoting an interesting line from his bio on the Olympics "Success doesn't come with your hands in your pocket." Ironically, he might have to rewrite that line now 😉 Shooting his way to a medal and breaking the internet with his style. We struck GOLD in Santiago! These pictures mean more to me than just a trip to the Pan Am Games. They are proof that there are “Breakers” in your organization. As Breaking (Breakdancing) makes its way onto the global stage, I can’t help but think about where we started and what Breaking really represents. This isn’t just about an art/hobby turned sport; it’s about the unexpected. It’s about the ‘underground Hip Hop culture’ shining when given the opportunity. In every organization, there are ‘breakers’... talented people beneath the surface, overlooked and misunderstood, waiting for their stage. They’re innovators, disruptors, and creators, often thought of as people who ‘don’t fit the culture’, because they don’t look or sound like the typical employee. You might see them as unprofessional, but I promise you, if we listen, and really see what they’re about, and if we gave them their stage, just like the Olympics did for Breaking, they would thrive! Look for those people who seem a little odd, or don’t think the same way and help them grow in your organization. Cultivate an environment where the unconventional can become the gold standard. Before they even announced Breaking in the Olympics, B-Boy Phil Wizard was already great as he won around the world a few years ago. And him being chosen as the flag bearer was extra special. It meant he represented the entire country and all of sport, by being true to himself and showcasing his art. Identify, nurture, and elevate the hidden breakers in your team. June 2022, at the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, two-time Olympian Anita Alvarez completed her free solo routine, then passed out and sank to the bottom of the pool. Her coach, Andrea Fuentes, noticed she had been underwater too long. Without hesitation, Fuentes jumped in fully clothed and pulled Anita to safety. Anita was unconscious and unable to save herself, and if not for her coach's quick action and deep knowledge of her athlete, she would have drowned. This story made me reflect on an important question: When you’re struggling and running out of strength, who will pull you to the surface? Are you surrounding yourself with people who notice when you need help and prioritize others' well-being? Do you lead by example? Can someone count on you to provide that essential support when they need it most? Jim Rohn's famous quote, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with,” applies to all areas of life, both personal and professional. If you’re a leader, hire individuals who embody the traits you admire and who can support others on the team. Choose an employer whose values align with your own. We have choices. Lead and live by example.
