When you think of recycling, you might picture a factory or a sorting machine, but at the heart of this process are the waste pickers, who tirelessly collect, categorize, and process recyclables, ensuring these materials don’t end up polluting our environment. Their work is a critical yet often overlooked part of the circular economy, where waste is transformed into valuable resources. Imagine the tons of plastic, cardboard, and metal that would otherwise be destined for landfills, never to be reused. Waste pickers intervene by recovering these materials and feeding them back into the production cycle. In doing so, they prevent resource depletion, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and play a crucial role in fighting climate change. Their contribution is monumental, yet too often they remain invisible unsung heroes in our pursuit of sustainability. Let’s shine a light on their vital role, acknowledge their impact, and continue advocating for their inclusion and recognition in global waste management systems. Without them, the circular economy would be incomplete. They deserve our support, respect, and admiration. #CircularEconomy #WastePickers #Sustainability #RecyclingChampions #TakaNiAjira ISWA International Solid Waste Association GAIA (Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives) International Alliance of Waste Pickers Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) Comrade Salisu Ali Yarima Alliance to End Plastic Waste Plastic Pollution Coalition KHALIFA SANI David Katz TakaNiAjira Foundation Uganda Ntabazi Raymond James Eng. From scavenging plastic waste to sorting through paper and cardboard, waste pickers are the backbone of our waste management system. Yet, their vital role often goes unnoticed. At TakaNiAjira Foundation, we recognize the invaluable contribution of waste pickers. They toil tirelessly in often hazardous conditions, yet receive minimal compensation for their efforts. Despite these challenges, they remain steadfast in keeping our communities clean and sustainable. We are proud to reaffirm our commitment to empowering waste pickers. They are not just workers but essential waste management value chain players. By supporting and uplifting them, we enhance their livelihoods and strengthen our collective efforts towards a more sustainable future. Together, let's ensure that they receive the respect, support, and compensation they truly deserve. #BeProudOfEachKilo #LetsValueWastePickers #TakaNiAjira #LightToWasteVoiceForWastePickers ISWA International Solid Waste Association WIEGO - Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing GAIA (Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives) Africa Circular Economy Research and Policy Network (ACERPiN) International Alliance of Waste Pickers UNDP Tanzania UNDP Accelerator Labs Alliance to End Plastic Waste Plastic Pollution Coalition Umesh Madhavan Fair Circularity Initiative The Circulate Initiative Eng. While waste pickers like Chweya, Njoroge, and Wangari fight tooth and nail for a robust #PlasticsTreaty that implements a just transition for waste pickers, the fossil fuel industry — responsible for 98% of plastic production — has also been hard at work, attempting to drown out their voices and undermine the negotiations. Learn more about how Kenyan waste pickers are fighting the plastic pollution crisis 👇 https://lnkd.in/giY_bNdi

🌍 Did you know that less than 10% of the seven billion tonnes of plastic waste generated globally has been recycled? Millions of tonnes of plastic waste end up lost in our environment or shipped far away, often being burned or dumped. This is a major problem facing our planet. ♻️ In our quest to combat plastic waste, we believe empowering waste pickers is key to increasing the quantity and quality of waste collected for recycling. Official data shows that waste pickers are responsible for collecting 60% of all plastic waste channeled for recycling. 💚 At TakaNiAjira Foundation, we remain steadfast in implementing social innovative programs that uplift waste pickers. Through these initiatives, we aim to enhance the quantity and quality of plastic waste collected by waste pickers, thereby reducing the growing plastic waste generation. #LightToWasteVoiceToWastePickers #LetsValueWastePickers #BeProudOfEachKilo ISWA International Solid Waste Association WIEGO - Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing International Alliance of Waste Pickers GAIA (Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives) Africa Circular Economy Research and Policy Network (ACERPiN) UNDP Tanzania UNDP Accelerator Labs Alliance to End Plastic Waste Plastic Pollution Coalition Umesh Madhavan Fair Circularity Initiative Eng.
