From The Lancet's Event Description: "Many of the big issues facing society—climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, health and social inequities—cut across traditional disciplines and sectors. Meaningfully addressing these issues calls for engagement with diverse ideas, methods, frameworks, and perspectives. This diversity demands integrative approaches to research and policy that can begin to address interrelated challenges, to minimise trade-offs and antagonisms, while also finding synergies that help progress towards a safer, fairer, and healthier world. Ongoing calls for integrative working now encompass multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and other collaborative approaches to research. The rationale for more joined up approaches is clear, yet requires new skills and capacities to navigate daunting complexity while avoiding unhelpful abstraction and simplification. Furthermore, there are many habitual, historical, and institutional factors which make working with colleagues from different intellectual traditions and orientations challenging in practice. This is why we shouldn't base public health advice solely on #epidemiology. As the graphs below show, different trajectories of risk are found for #redmeat consumption depending on the methodology of the studies, including whether risk is assumed to be 'zero' at the lowest intakes. Don't forget that it was epidemiology that gave us the 'beta-carotene prevents cancer' hypothesis - later found to be false when high doses given to smokers in randomised controlled trials promoted lung cancer. Also, early epidemiological studies told us that coffee causes cancer - again found to be false when confounders such as smoking were taken into account. Epidemiology is a useful indicator but needs to be backed up with intervention trials of disease markers and mechanistic evidence before we tell everyone to change their dietary habits.
