Sometimes it’s the job you do win that nearly kills you. This video popped up on my phone today and it was a reminder of hard lesson. In the pursuit of growth, I like to say “Yes” to new opportunities, even when I’m not sure all of what “Yes” entails. The video is from a job that we should not have done and cost us much more than a missed opportunity. Construction and mining, the operations are people and equipment intensive. You have to have the right people, the right equipment, and the right training to ensure your human resources effectively manage the massive capital ivestments. And when you push too far, the consequences are gnarly. Burnt out managers being asked to do the impossible. Deflated labor force unable to find a successful rythym. Poorly maintained equipment because of the erratic performance and mounting pressure for “results”. That RFP that just came across your desk might be the biggest opportunity you’ve ever considered bidding. But it won’t be the last opportunity if you are able to sustainably maintain and grow your organization.
