In an amazing effort to divert behavioral health calls away from first responders and toward mental health professionals, South Sound 911—the largest call center in Washington—has created an initiative to actively address the increasing number of mental health crisis calls it is receiving. This is just one of three pilot centers in the state. Volunteers of America (the designated provider for 988 hotlines in Western Washington) plans to continue growing this initiative and eventually support six counters and a coordinator working in the co-location facility. Dispatchers everywhere are noticing an increased number of 911 calls involving a mental or behavioral health component, and it's wonderful to see initiatives taking shape that work to help people in need with a behavioral health response rather than involving law enforcement. Mental health is for everyone, and everyone deserves support when they need it. The Neighborhood Center serves all individuals at every stage of their mental health journey, offering a range of services including group therapy, one-on-one counseling, and crisis intervention. The Mobile Crisis Assessment team was recently called by law enforcement to assist with L (they/them), who was experiencing intense psychosis. They were found rocking back and forth in a fetal position, exhibiting agitation, hallucinations, and confusion about reality. Unable to care for themselves, L became increasingly upset by the presence of law enforcement, prompting the issuance of a 9.58, which is a code indicating a mental health crisis requiring immediate assistance from mental health professionals or medical personnel. Collaborating with law enforcement, the team worked to ensure a smooth transition for L's transport. Despite their agitation, L remained calm while communicating with the team, facilitating their safe transfer to the ambulance. Once admitted to the hospital, L received the care they needed. The cooperation and support from law enforcement were exceptional, with officers demonstrating patience and understanding throughout the process. Their willingness to accommodate the MCATs needs and sensitivity to L's condition contributed to a dignified and careful handling of the situation. This interaction highlights the Mobile Crisis Assessment team's goal to assist law enforcement in crisis situations and prevent unnecessary mental health-related arrests. Today, I took a step I never imagined I would need to, but one I consider extremely important. 🌟 I reached out to the suicide prevention helpline listed on the https://cpsmontreal.ca/en/ website, at 1-866-277-3553, seeking support for someone very close to me, almost family, who is facing significant mental health challenges. 🧠💔 Although I am not personally considering suicide, the need to provide support to someone in such a situation made me realize the critical importance of these services. 💡 However, something that caught my attention was the wait time to be connected, which was approximately 11 minutes and 45 seconds. ⏳ I understand that these services are in high demand and that each call requires careful and dedicated attention, but I couldn't help but wonder about the efficiency of the response system and whether this wait time is common. 🤔 Do you think a wait time of almost 12 minutes is reasonable for such a critical service as a suicide prevention helpline? 📞❓ Mental health is an issue that can affect us all, directly or indirectly, and I believe that openly discussing these experiences can help improve existing support systems. 🌍💬

September is Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month. We would like to take the time to help destigmatize suicidal ideation and prioritize mental health and well-being. Mental health disparities exist among women and minorities in engineering and STEM fields, often stemming from experiences of gender and racial bias, imposter syndrome or lack of representation. According to the Society of Women Engineers, more than 10% of female engineers and more than 30% of female engineering students suffer from some form of mental health issue. Additionally, according to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) National Transit Database, suicide is the leading cause of fatalities on public transit and the number of these incidents has been increasing. In a December 2022 Safety Advisory, FTA has advised transit agencies to install or update suicide prevention signage because there is a connection between this signage and fewer suicide attempts. When an inmate dies by suicide, the Calvary is sent in. There is a team of psychologists who conduct psychological autopsies to learn what risk factors/protective factors were present and what critical periods left a person vulnerable. The data is tracked so the organization knows when to provide extra care for high-risk individuals. That data is turned into an inmate-specific risk assessment tool for psychologists to use to identify low, medium, and high risk during their care. Departments do not want to be legally liable and pay money for negligence. Inmate suicide is unacceptable. Death benefits for firefighters may set the precedent that suicide is not only acceptable but celebrated. That can be dangerous. Why not spend some of the money (if not all) on prevention? Why not spend some on a psychological autopsy team after a firefighter's death? Why are inmates' lives worth more than firefighters'? Why are psychologist organizations not in the room when these decisions are made?

When the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline transitioned from a traditional 10-digit phone number to #988, it received 2 million more calls, texts, and chats than the previous year. While it's amazing that this resource has become more accessible than ever before, it's vital that it is fully prepared to handle this influx in contacts. Through federal, state, and local support, 988 can continue to serve communities to the best of its ability.
