Talcott was pleased to be a sponsor for the Actuaries’ Club of Hartford and Springfield semiannual meeting, recently held at the Hartford Convention Center. Over 300 local actuaries gathered at the meeting to discuss industry trends, attend professionalism seminars, and network with others in the field.
John Brady, Talcott’s US & VA Chief Actuary, and John Golemba, a Senior Actuarial Consultant, teamed up for a well-attended breakout presentation on the trade-offs between complexity and interpretability in setting actuarial modeling assumptions.
Thank you to the ACHS Club Organizers for planning such a wonderful event and we look forward to continuing our involvement in the future.

One of my favorite quotes from David Wilkie describes the difference between the actuarial approach to long term economic risks, and that taken in neo-classic macro economics:
“I like to start with as long a run of data as I can find. One can learn something from this older data, but one has to interpret in accordance with the circumstances at the time. The approach I then use is time-series modelling…there are different objectives when using time-series modelling, which I can perhaps best explain by the difference between forecasting the weather and studying the climate"
David Wilkie kicked of a whole field of research and work in actuarial modelling which is still very active to this day, and much more significantly, very broadly used in practice to manage the financial risks and economic capital across the insurance and pensions sector.
My colleague, Alasdair Thompson, has been asked to talk about how this modelling is now being extended to cover long term climate risks. In a significant sense, bringing things full circle, and refocusing onto the sort of long term risks that Wilkie was most interested in.
