Japan through my lens (Part 3) Kanpai - the Ice breaker! When I first landed in Japan, my Japanese colleagues introduced me to the tradition of "Kanpai". It wasn’t just a casual drink; it was a doorway to understanding and connecting on a deeper level. A lot in Japan happens over a Kanpai, whether celebrating professional success or personal milestones. My colleagues explained how this simple act of raising a glass could foster strong bonds with clients and colleagues alike. It’s very common in Japan to unwind with your coworkers over an after-work drink, creating an informal setting to build trust and camaraderie. Kanpai holds significant importance in Japanese culture, serving as more than just a prelude to drinking. It's a deeply rooted tradition that embodies respect, unity, and camaraderie. In a professional context, Kanpai often marks the beginning of social interactions that transcend the boundaries of formal office settings. It helps to break down hierarchical barriers, allowing colleagues to bond on a more personal level, fostering trust and mutual respect—essential elements for effective teamwork and collaboration. On a personal level, Kanpai is a way to celebrate achievements, milestones, and friendships. It's a moment of shared joy and acknowledgment, reinforcing social bonds and community ties. My Japanese colleagues gave me some important tips, which I can share with you. Who Initiates? : Wait for the host or a senior member to initiate the toast. It’s a sign of respect. The Glass Positioning: Ensure your glass is lower than that of the person initiating the toast or your senior or a client. This shows humility and respect. The Eye Contact: Make eye contact while toasting. It signifies sincerity and connection. Synchronization: Wait until everyone has their drink before saying “Kanpai” together. It signifies Unity! Cheers to that! #KanpaiCulture #JapaneseTraditions #ProfessionalBonding #CulturalIntegration #WorkLifeBalance #TeamBuilding #Camaraderie #RespectAndUnity #BusinessEtiquette #JapaneseHospitality

Salam Jumaat: A Day of Reflection, Gratitude, and Growth in a Multicultural Nation For Malay Muslims in Malaysia, Friday is a day of spiritual renewal and reflection. The greeting "Salam Jumaat" carries a deeper meaning—a sense of community, harmony, and hope for blessings. In our vibrant, multicultural country, Friday reminds us of shared values like gratitude, reflection, and continuous growth—values that resonate across all communities and beliefs. --- 1. Reflection: A Universal Practice Friday is an opportunity for muhasabah (self-reflection)—a time to evaluate actions and intentions. Reflection inspires personal growth and fosters a culture of learning and collaboration. Ask yourself: What have I achieved this week? How have I contributed to others? What can I improve? --- 2. Gratitude: A Shared Value The concept of syukur (gratitude) is central to Friday for Muslims, yet gratitude unites us all. Simple acts like appreciating a colleague or thanking someone in your life nurture positivity and strengthen relationships. --- 3. Growth: Striving for Excellence Friday prayers encourage ihsan (excellence) and self-improvement. In our workplaces and communities, we can embrace challenges, learn from diversity, and grow together. --- Celebrating Harmony In Malaysia’s multicultural tapestry, Friday is more than a day of worship—it’s an opportunity to celebrate shared humanity. Salam Jumaat is a message of goodwill and positivity for all, transcending differences. --- Final Thoughts Salam Jumaat reminds us to live with purpose, gratitude, and unity. Let’s embrace these values in our daily lives and build a brighter, more inclusive future together. What does Friday mean to you? Share your reflections below! Salam Jumaat.

The Daruma doll embodies the Japanese philosophy of unwavering determination, "Fall Seven Times, Get up Eight). On Katie Anderson's Japan Study Trip, https://lnkd.in/ddES-u3, I learned its powerful Daruma ritual: color one eye after setting your goal, and once complete, color the second eye upon achievement. This visual reminder of commitment has transformed my approach to sharing my intentions, goal-setting, and personal growth. Discover my full journey through rural Japan and the impact of these traditions at https://lnkd.in/eZW4wNib.
As the new year begins, do you have dreams you hope to make a reality? When setting important goals, people in Japan often make wishes 🙏 with Daruma! In our short infographic, discover the ancient inspiration behind these iconic good luck charms and the unique way to use them. #Daruma

It's #AAPI Month and arguably one of my favorite times of the year but that's because I reflect on the impact of growing up in such a terrific culture in Japan 🎌 has made on me. 🤔 What is it? AAPI recognizes the contributions and influence of #AsianAmericans, #NativeHawaiians, #PacificIslanders and many more to #history, #culture, and #achievements. (see a map by GBV here: https://lnkd.in/gH6ndbRj) 🤗 Why is it important? Like with other groups, it's important to recognize that every person is different and makes a difference. Their story is important to tell; your story is important to tell. Without these stories and impact, change can't happen. 🗣 Great! But what difference can I possibly make? 🔺 Yield 🔺 to make space for those around you 👂 Listen 👂 with purpose and understanding; this is where we learn the art of compassion, support, and build relationships over time. 📖 Learn 📖 other cultures, heritages, beliefs and customs to expand your #worldview. Understanding cultures helps us as a society overcome (and prevent) racial and ethnic divisions which are so prevalent now 💨 Act 💨 by standing up for what's right! Take action by speaking up when injustice is taking place #BeHuman. #BeAuthentic. #BeAccepting. It's not hard... really.
