Everyone who works in Epic knows how hard it is to actually land a job supporting the application. I have, all around about 10 years of Epic Support. But I have always worked as a contractor. So that means that I, of course have no Certs in Epic. With that being said, I work with all these contractors with the broken promises of being told that the client that I am supporting will get you certified after going fulltime. I go fulltime and it never happens, when brought up or discussed it is shut down. Getting an Epic Cert is not possible to do without a client supporting you. I was top analyst for several years doing Epic Support, helping with Elbow support, supporting command centers when needed. One company, I was employed with thought that I was good enough to get certified in another EHR, but did not want to expense anything towards a Epic Cert. I was an employee who made myself very open for whatever was needed. I worked long hours, I would work a 10 hour shift, go home for 4 hours, clock back in and do another shift. I worked almost all holidays, I was a fill in for where ever there was a gap in staffing. I was there. My stats was ranking number one of 3 teams in a whole, I was cross trained in multiple accounts. I was damn good at my job. I out performed anyone, and did it flawlessly. I am the prime example of someone giving their all to a company to be let down. I was let go due to a misunderstanding. A multi-million dollar company let me go over a $849.66 misunderstanding. I was devastated. That was my perfect job, since then I have not been able to find one that I have loved as much as I did that one. I need advice, help, reach out, I want to get back in to a career like that again. I have been looking but it seem almost impossible. How does OnDemand work? I'll be sharing some specific examples on an ongoing basis as part of a Case Study series to give real life examples of where this model has worked. Here's instalment one, Casual Clinical Support. Background: Highly technical Clinical Support required in a regional location without local representation. Case Support from the incumbent TM required FIFO. Challenges: There was no available local “immediate” support for emergency cases or for set / inventory maintenance. The structure created sky-rocketing travel expenses in addition to challenges supporting the business in the primary metro territory when the rep was away in the regional area. There were also ongoing issues with consignment and loan equipment in the regional area. Solution: Local candidate was identified and there was investment from client company and agency in training and onboarding them. Significant support was required in the short-term to get them embedded in the business and up to speed on the key procedures and products. Method: Completely casual arrangement. There was no “rhythm” to case schedules so couldn’t lock in days however client agreed to a minimum engagement per week to ensure regular equipment / stock maintenance and customer in-servicing (even when there were no cases booked) Result: Local representation on an ad hoc basis for 6+ years, even through Covid-19 pandemic when borders were closed. Attention all my healthcare mobility IT folk that use Epic... I co-wrote a blog talking about a better way to integrate MyChart and WS1. Rather than Epic doing a device wipe which means staff has to rejoin the iPad to wifi manually using a new iOS17 return to service command. Epic tags the device, which in turn uses Intelligence to issue the return to service wipe which includes a WiFi profile. The device doesn't completely touch less wipe and rejoins wifi automatically, goes through DEP, and back to the home screen with no touches. Work Smart, Not Hard! In many organizations, onboarding a new employee involves a lengthy process: the HR team sends an email to IT, IT creates an Active Directory (AD) user, sets up email and Wi-Fi access, and assigns storage permissions. Often, the system admin is juggling multiple tasks and can't always provide immediate help. This can be a significant load, especially in a university with numerous students and staff. As a network administrator at my current company and a certified ManageEngine professional, I've found an efficient solution: ManageEngine AD Manager. We have streamlined our onboarding process using this tool. Now, HR enters the new employee's data into the AD portal, filling out mandatory fields as per our role creation policy. The system admin only needs to approve the request, and the user account is created automatically. ManageEngine AD Manager also provides automation policies for tasks like email creation and custom storage permissions. Verging on an Epic failure with MyChart My primary care provider set up a virtual visit using Epic's MyChart. I received a reminder two days in advance and decided to press the Test Hardware button in the message. I received a screen saying "Something went wrong." I guess that if you write software that fails, there's no point to writing informative error messages to go with it. I conferred with the provider's staff, who couldn't help me but gave me the phone number of the helpline at Mt. Auburn Hospital, who hosts that instance of MyChart. Luckily, I got through fairly quickly to a helpline staffer. She explained that the virtual visit is designed to accept logins 30 minutes in advance. Logins (and tests) are not expected to work before that time. In view of that explanation, the screen's advice to "Relaunch the test to try again" is not just irrelevant, but irresponsible and disrespectful. The Test Hardware button proved to be a useless distraction, because it had disappeared when I visited the web page for the appointment 30 minutes in advance. The hardware did work, and I logged in successfully. But what if the login had failed then? What if I had only a few minutes to try to fix a problem or would miss my visit? Can the healthcare field make more use of digital companies who design software with a rational purpose?
