Isn't this incredible? Institutions from across the creative industries could learn from this! The more your investing in young people, the more you're investing in your own future. Too often companies expect candidates to start their job roles knowing more than they possibly could and it's utterly bizarre. Instead, why not do what Factory International have done and give young people the opportunity to train and learn about their options within the industry. Instead of leaving young people to it, hoping that somehow they'll find a way to gain these very specific skills, Factory International have instead decided to share their expertise and insure the future of their industry. Equipping them with the skills required seems like a no-brainer doesn't it? Or am I losing it?

STOP ASKING FOR UNNECESSARY COLLEGE DEGREES!!! I've run into so many job listings where 'Bachelors' or 'Masters' degrees are thrown as required, and I can tell from the description of the company and/or the way the job listing is written that such a degree is not necessary and should not be a 'hard no' to anyone without such a degree who is otherwise VERY qualified for the position. Imagine this - it's 1997, and you are a newly minted head of a movie studio. You have a BLOCKBUSTER script that you want to turn into a summer sensation. Now you have three directors, and you're looking at their resumes. First thing - eliminate everyone who doesn't have at least a Bachelors degree on their resume. One doesn't have the degree - so off he goes. Of the other two, one has a Bachelors, one has a Masters! Well ain't that handy! Your job is DONE. You just pick the Masters, and it's a cinch you'll have the biggest movie in town! You just hired Corbun J. Perrywinkle Jr, and he has a Masters, so you're in! Except - the dude with no degree at all - was Steven Spielberg. Yeah, as of 1997, Spielberg had NO degree in filmmaking. Not even an Associates. BUT - he had the talent. So you've just written off your summer blockbuster because your newhire had to have the word 'Bachelors' on their resume. Look beyond the simple check boxes. Evaluate the person. Call and talk for 5 minutes, see what you get. I'm an Instructional Designer and a Technical Trainer with experience in multiple industries and in some cases, wicked skills in learning highly complex information to put in the blockbuster training videos that I create. And I put my heart and soul into writing scripts for MY videos. Because that's what Steven Spielberg told me to do when I met him. In 1997. Before even HE had a Bachelor's degree.

Many inspirational career educators have influenced me, but this book, in particular, has completely changed how I present a career journey to young people. Although it is intended for adults, the message is just as important to younger students. Bill Burnett and Dave Evans' "DESIGNING YOUR LIFE" outlines five mindsets: Be Curious, Try Stuff, Reframe Problems, Know It's a Process, and Ask for Help. Bill Burnett is the Executive Director of the Stanford Design Program. Dave Evans is an entrepreneur who led the design of Apple's first mouse and was an early employee at Electronic Arts before becoming a Consulting Assistant Professor at Stanford University. My job is to inspire teachers to bring career education into their classrooms. The challenge has always been helping teachers see the importance and impact that career education can have at an early age. Sharing dysfunctional beliefs and the most current research is the foundation for inspiring career influencers in schools. These are the career champions on the ground, creating engaging opportunities for their students through broadening students' aspirations and addressing gender stereotypes. When teachers understand the "why" of career education in the early years, the possibilities for incorporating career exploration into everyday practice are endless. This is achieved through teacher training, professional development, and staff meeting presentations. When administrators understand the "why" of career education, they are motivated to host school-wide events and create a network of community speakers. This means allowing for flexibility in co-teaching and collaborative initiatives. When school boards understand the "why" and are presented with the data, they prioritize career education by ensuring schools are staffed with skilled career educators. Each level of the education system must actively develop and implement a career education scope and sequence from Kindergarten to Grade 12. This is when the magic happens, and we see significant increases in students' transitions to employment, education and training after high school. Career as an Art, not a Science. Reading an article by leadership expert Julie Winkle Giulioni, brought to clarity the random thoughts I had for the past years. Coloring outside the lines, in most businesses, can get you in trouble. But, charting your own path, taking risks, and being creative can be good rules to follow. Being a "career artist" may mean charting a non-linear path in your career. From a ballerina, to a banker. From real estate to software development. These industries provided many colors and directional knowledge, presenting the biggest possible canvas to create ones development and satisfaction to career desires. Find ways to add your unique flair through special projects, mentoring or taking new challenges, Giulioni advises. I am enjoying the coloring my canvas!
