I had an interesting conversation today with someone who asked, 'Why should my resume be short? I have decades of experience.' They truly did have an impressive background. But then I asked them, 'How much time would you spend reading someone else's resume?' They thought for a moment and replied, 'About a minute.' That was the moment they realized why a resume needs to be concise. If people typically spend just a minute skimming through resumes, you need to create something that can be fully read and understood in that short time. Otherwise, you're including a lot of details that no one will even see. This is why the '30-second scan test' is such a crucial standard. Either make it short or strategically use bold or italics to draw attention to key sections. But the goal is simple: in about 30 seconds, someone should be able to scan your resume and get the most important points. And there's an added benefit to this. By highlighting key parts, you can guide the reader's focus to the areas of your experience that matter most and steer the conversation in your favor. How long should your resume be? This is a question that I get very often. Well, most of the times, we all buy a product or service from an individual who makes us feel confident in the specific item. That being said, the question should be, what information does the organization need to know about us to make them more confident that I am the right candidate. Answering this question will help you condense your resume significantly. Most people include too much information. Companies don’t need a comprehensive overview, they need a summary that clearly shows you’re a fit for the role. Sometimes, a great resume can extend to a third page. If the resume is well-crafted, length doesn't matter. However, if it’s poorly organized and the reader has to dig for key information, a 3-page resume can be a deal-breaker. Focus on making your resume a persuasive summary, not an exhaustive account.

When it comes to crafting your resume, there's always a question: How long should it be? The truth is, there's no one-size-fits-all answer. Your resume should be like a good story: concise, engaging, and leaving the reader wanting more. Recruiters and hiring managers are busy people. They appreciate brevity and clarity. If you're writing your resume remember to bullet point what you accomplished. Instead of simply listing job responsibilities. Your resume is a marketing tool to grab attention quickly. Use quantifiable metrics and specific examples to illustrate how you've added value in previous roles. Employers appreciate candidates who can demonstrate their impact, whether it be through tangible business goals or awards and accolades. Use a simple block syle resume. Without colors or tables. The simpler the better. And please DO NOT use large blocks of text. People don't read them when scanning a resume. Instead streamline your resume for maximum readability, and free from distracting fonts and colors. Your resume does not need to be an exhaustive view of EVERYTHING you have done. It is too much information if it is written that way. Just give your relavent experience for the role you are actually seeking. And remember do not try to appeal to everyone in your resume. A jack of all trades gets lost in today’s market. Simple is always better. #jennjobs

A resume. How can a piece of paper represent our skills? It doesn't. It applies past data to extrapolate future fit. It samples the outcomes said skills have on organizations. The key here is impact. Just like products, resumes can be user tested. They can also be ever iterated. Ultimately, we are often the worst at representing our own impact. I've found different perspectives and small changes not only make the difference between getting a new opportunity or not - but upgrading your entire career trajectory. Resume word-smithing can smelt gold.
