👀 As part of my job I speak with hundreds of engineers and one of the key concerns I find across the market is individuals lacking an environment that is challenging, and giving them a platform to learn new skills and processes. The packaging sector is undoubtedly one of the most interesting to be involved in, especially with innovation and sustainability understandably high on the agenda and it's one I can't recommend highly enough. 📈 This new DS Smith facility opening in Birmingham is a great example of the investment that companies within the packaging sector are taking and I imagine many of us will be intrigued by the fascinating innovations that will inevitably come out of this site. Great news also for the industry in Birmingham with the employment and collaboration opportunities that this brings. 💡 If you're a maintenance engineer considering a move into the packaging sector, why not get in contact with myself or Adam Dougan to talk about the benefits of doing so and how we can support you in this transition?

In honour of The British Science Association kicking off #BritishScienceWeek (8-17 March) with a question time panel exploring how science, society and policy will effect our future; Sustainable Engineering Founder Jonathan Barrett FRSA is answering some questions across these 3 pillars and how this mirrors engineering sectors. Q: What legislation, regulations and standards are making OEMs think more sustainably about their products? A: A wave is heading OEMs’ way. Picking two at random: Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and Digital Product Passports (DPP). SE is studying hard across the legislative landscape. Q: What concerns do design engineers have when building their bill-of-materials (BoM)? A: One concern is making sure the BoM contributes to a positive product lifecycle assessment (LCA). SE is currently undertaking the Leader's LCA Course from the Environmental Impacts Academy. Q: What societal responsibilities does industry have to sustaining a green future? A: Simple. Care for the environment, local community, wider society, employees and, ultimately, customers. On this front, SE has started its B Corp journey. Q: What scientific innovations are inspiring you regarding sustainable design? A: A front runner is the concept of local, lot-size-one manufacturing using additive manufacturing technology. For example, SE uses a 3D printer to manufacture products and spares for the office. Q: What is one thing everyone reading this on LinkedIn can take away today and do to make a positive impact? A: Try to find the time to learn how pathfinding individuals and organisations are successfully and profitably transitioning to circular business models. PDF Materials and Innovative Product Development: Using Common Sense Gernot H. Gessinger digsell https://lnkd.in/eShpCDt9 Innovation in product design starts with materials. Developing successful commercial products demands a sound understanding of the materials that go into those products-their uses, their costs, their lifetime performance. However, the valuable knowledge of materials engineers is often not fully leveraged in the creative phase of the product design cycle. Gessinger seeks to bridge this gap that exists in many companies. Written from the bottom-up perspective of the engineer or scientist on a product design team, Materials and Innovative Product Design introduces business, economics and strategic product development to the materials specialist and demystifies materials selection for other members of … Read More » https://lnkd.in/egy7-wWD
