Is company picking more impactful on career outcomes than talent or skill? Opinions welcomed. We've all seen the average performer jump multiple career stages by being in the right place at the right time. We've also all seen a rockstar languish at a mediocre startup that never finds product market fit. Curious what people think the percentage influence of company picking is compared to individual ability? At this point, I lean towards 50/50 picking vs ability. That's one of the topics for tonight's panel discussion at our Pavilion Toronto Happy Hour hosted at StartWell. I'll be hosting Vanessa B. Celebrating 7 Years of W Talent Solutions! 👏 Today, on our anniversary, it's always a fun experience to reflect on the adventure of business ownership and community impact. Reflecting on the journey, it's incredible to see how far we've come. You've heard the stats (Forbes Advisor): ▪️ 20% of businesses fail in the first year, and 50% by year five. ▪️ Only 18% of small businesses in the US have employees. ▪️ 43% of small business owners are women. I could say something cliche like, "I found success because I wouldn't take 'no' for an answer." But, that's not the truth. I had heard 'No' A LOT. It was how I handled the rejection, learned from it, quickly pivoted, and moved on, that helped me succeed. I attribute the success of W Talent Solutions to tenacity and grit. Two qualities few are naturally born with. Here's what we've achieved so far at W Talent Solutions: 💼 Filled over 200 high-level roles. 🗣️ Conducted 50,000+ combined interviews. 🤝 Volunteered over 1,000 hours, giving back to our community. The Timeline: 2017: Started as a one-woman shop. 2018: Welcomed my first employee. 2019: Bought my first office space. 2020: Faced challenges, downsized, then rebuilt by EOY. 2021: Promoted my integrator, a key growth move. 2022: Doubled our team in size. 2023: Underwent a complete rebranding. 2024: Now, we're planning to double in size again! The journey has not been easy. Business ownership/leadership is not for the faint of heart. I've made a lot of sacrifices to be here.
