As promised, here is my post on what you should know about a direct PhD.
Simply put, it is for those with bachelor’s degree, who want to further their studies, but instead of doing a master’s degree, they apply for PhD studies.
This is not so easy in the minds of people but it is simple and a common given in the United States.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂:
1. You have a stellar profile.
2. You have some research experience as little as it can be, it serves.
3. You have professional experience.
4. You have some publications.
5. You’re currently doing something in the field of study that is of interest to you.
6. You are in the STEM field.
You don’t have to have all these qualifications but 2 out of 3 can put you on the advantageous side.

Pathways to Research and Doctoral Careers (PREDOC) is a consortium of universities and research institutions that aims to remove barriers to access to research and doctoral careers. These barriers include asymmetries of information, education, credentialing, and affordability. Our initiatives foster a population in quantitative social science that is more talented, diverse, and inclusive.
At predoc.org, we amplify diverse research opportunities in the quantitative social sciences. Our main focus is on pre-doctoral opportunities, one-to-two year *paid* assistantships designed to better prepare students for graduate research, and a great opportunity for those still exploring what a research career looks like to determine whether a PhD is right for them. Since the journey to a pre-doc often starts early in a undergraduate career, we spend the majority of our resources helping students develop the coding, professional, and research skills necessary to submit a successful application. However, we are interested, above all, in motivating would-be researchers to consider the possibilities available in quantitative social science fields, and empowering them each step of the way.

This is an open question, with some folks thinking it is entirely within a faculty member's purview to provide high quality career mentorship, no matter where the student wants to go next. (Professors are professional learners, they say. They can learn how to mentor for diverse careers.)
Others, understandably, point to their own limited career experience and the primary (and secondary, tertiary, etc.) aim of their role, which isn't to be an all-purpose career preparation resource for all their graduate students.
I can see value in all the various perspectives and nuances here, especially because career education is a professional field!
Folks like me, who do this full-time and have done for over a decade, are experts in this, not hobbyists or doing it on the side of our desks.
I'm all for individual faculty members who want to learn and do better in this area, but if they don't want to dedicate time and resources to this, I think that's entirely reasonable! They are already stretched thin, generally.
I'm glad universities have stepped up in the past few years. Good. They should be hiring professionals to support graduate students.
Most of my own clients are profs, postdocs, and other already graduated PhDs, not grad students.

As a professor, pursue the careers of your PhD students & postdocs instead of pursuing your own.
If we all did it, it would solve so many problems in academia.
Why the personal gain is the biggest motivator for many professors?
1. You get more publications, more awards, more invited talks… Your recognition grows (‘academic KPI’).
2. You can get more funding, more students and better salary.
3. Your professional growth means your students get a better visibility.
4. Tenure requirements are too demanding and if you stop focusing on personal gain, you may be denied tenure.
But there is a problem:
1. We lose track of the wellbeing and personal preferences of team members. Yes, it feels like we’re still in control, but in fact we become less efficient at it.
2. Then, the progress and personal development of students are impeded. Their career opportunities can plummet.
3. Too much funding in one lab often means that PhD students get far less mentoring and research advising than in smaller labs. The professor is simply unavailable for it.
4. Young professors are constantly stressed. Departments often exaggerate the tenure challenges to ensure their young hires are “hard-working faculties”. In reality, very few professors are denied tenure.
📍 My message is:
If we all could pursue the careers of our students & postdocs, this would shift in priorities.
It will make academia a much better world to live in.
I see an increasing number of faculties trying to genuinely care for their team members. In all countries and academic environments.
It is all possible. Just do it.
And don’t forget:
Growth of your team members = Growth of yourself.

🤔 Is Creativity Being Overlooked in Academia? My Search for a PhD Position
In recent months, as I've been seeking a PhD position, I've noticed a common trend: many professors seem to prefer students who excel at following established frameworks and carrying out routine tasks flawlessly. As someone who values creativity and innovation, I often feel overlooked in this environment that prioritizes conformity. It seems that in the pursuit of scientific achievements, the significance of individuality and original thought is often underestimated.
But amidst these challenges, I remain steadfast in my belief that academia should be a place that welcomes diverse perspectives and unconventional ideas. As a researcher, I am eager to find an academic setting that not only accepts but celebrates creativity and innovation. I firmly believe that true progress arises not from rigidly adhering to tradition, but from daring to challenge norms and explore new approaches to problem-solving.
So, as I continue my search for the ideal PhD position, I do so with a renewed sense of purpose. My goal is to find a community of scholars who share my enthusiasm for intellectual exploration and who embrace the potential of bold ideas. For me, it's about more than just obtaining a degree; it's about finding a supportive environment where my academic aspirations can thrive, and where innovation is not only encouraged but celebrated.
