Grumpiest Recruiter ! - Still hiring Engineers, and whatever else they throw at me! Saving the world one CV at a time!
Career opportunities? It's how you look at them One of my collection items, a View Camera, is an amazing thing, although it can't look around corners, it looks like it can. It can distort the image and present a different view. Recruiting Engineers for a little while now I bump into an engineering mindset that applies linear logic to careers. I have to keep telling people, look at both sides of the equation, look around the corner, then decide. Kick it around. And then it's actually a non-linear function! Sometimes the oddest ideas turn out to be the best. Even if they appear not to be the safest. But what the hell do I know. I am not AI generated. #CareerOpportunities #EngineeringMindset #Recruitment

Skills-Based Hiring for the Tech Sector The rapid pace of technological innovation has resulted in a significant talent gap for tech companies. A recent survey of Canadian technology hiring managers revealed that over half have identified a skills gap in their department, and almost 50% believe that impact is more noticeable today than one year ago. Skills-based hiring, which screens for specific competencies rather than focusing on degrees, previous job titles, and years of experience, has emerged as a potential method to alleviate this gap since it significantly widens and diversifies the available talent pool. Skills-based hiring allows candidates to highlight their ability and initiative to upskill and keep abreast of the most current technologies, either through completing micro-credentials or learning on their own time. In addition, the skills assessment portion of the interview provides proof of the candidate’s proficiencies, which can lead to greater productivity in a shorter period of time and greater employee retention rates (since employees are more likely to be engaged in their work). While skills-based hiring offers many benefits, the primary challenge of this hiring method is needing to clearly define all the skills necessary for the position (and future developmental roles), and determining the best way to validate a candidate’s proficiency with those current and future skills. Work-integrated learning (WIL) experiences, such as the FIRST Jobs Program, offer a tremendous opportunity to assess a candidate’s skills, but other methods may include reviewing examples of work. Many companies have incorporated small sample problems into their interview practices - to be completed ahead, during, or post interview. There also needs to be a balance between the focus on skills and still giving consideration to a candidate’s qualifications and work experience. Formal education provides a strong basis for a large span of candidate value - but is not necessarily a barrier to entry, or a guarantee of competency. As technology continues to evolve, continuous learning becomes essential - making skills-based hiring a strong approach to finding the right candidates that will help your business grow and thrive. #techAB #albertatech #focusontalent

I've recently been hiring hardware/electronic engineers for my startup. The process of interviewing over 50 candidates for 2 positions, left me with a few interesting observations. The impact of Covid on learning outcomes is not just for young kids; but also adults, i.e. students pursuing their graduation. While this may not be entirely surprising, I expected adults to display more motivation in safeguarding their learning. Here are the key observations I gathered: 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: Many candidates struggled with basic concepts, most likely due to disruptions in their first and second years. For example, understanding how a diode works or determining the number of combinations 8 bits can represent. 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆: A notable number of candidates lacked proficiency in technical terms, such as what a voltage divider or a comparator means. 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆: A significant portion of the candidates presented projects that lacked originality. Atleast ⅓ of the candidates had made one of these projects - "IoT-based greenhouse" “Bluetooth-controlled car”, “line follower robot”. 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺-𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀: Several candidates demonstrated a lack of foresight regarding real-world applications, failing to consider practicality and real world challenges. Based on this, I anticipate these consequences: 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀: Graduates from these disrupted batches will need to exert extra effort in their initial years to catch up with their counterparts graduating in 2025/2026. 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: To enhance their employability, individuals from these batches will likely need to invest additional efforts in acquiring fundamental and job-specific skills. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀: Despite an overall decline in hiring, smaller companies recruiting fewer candidates may face difficulties in securing talent. If you are in similar shoes, do share your experience; and pointers to recruit or train candidates are always welcome. 𝗣𝗦: Finally, I did find 2 good candidates who have decent basics and are eager to learn :-) #startup #hardwareishard #hardwareengineer #hiringourheroes

Only #BTech can fix your life!!! As an engineering student, I can say this is just a myth. No, I have not any problem with B.Tech. (I am happy pursuing B.E.) In fact, if you have interest in #technology or #engineering, BE/BTech can actually fix your life! But, if you have interest in other field(s), It's wiser to choose them as your career insted of going with the current trend. Why? Trends come and go. Trends can't decide your career. It's only you who can decide your career. So, choose you #career path wisely. PS: What are your take on this? Let's have a discussion on that in comments... Hook Credit: Akansha Gupta

DELIVERING THE CRITICAL TALENT SO MY CLIENTS ACHIEVE THIER GOALS. We work with industry leaders and startups in Manufacturing & Engineering.
Were you successful? The second half of 2024 is officially upon us. Was the first half of the year a success? Did you meet your objectives? If not, what held you back? Was it talent or hiring issues? Now is the time to formulate your strategy to ensure success in the back half of 2024. BTW, hope is not a strategy. If you’re relying solely on job boards and LinkedIn to fill your mission-critical roles, you’re only hoping for success. Top talent is out there, but they’re gainfully employed and too busy crushing it at their current job to notice your online job postings. Did you know that only 24% of the workforce is actively looking for new opportunities but 66% said they’d be open to new opportunities if they knew about them. Don’t let hope ruin your 2024. If you’re serious about building a high-performing team, you need a proactive approach. I can help by strategically motivating top talent and positioning your opportunity so that it catches their attention. Make the second half of 2024 your best yet. Don’t leave your success to chance—take action now! #leadership #highperformingteams #robotics #roboticsengineering #iiot #teambuilding #engineeringmanager #hiringmanager #manufacturing #automation #controlsengineer #automationengineer #controlsengineering #automationengineering #jamesmichaelgroup #rollingstones #getwhatyouneed #controlsengineer #automationengineer #controlsengineering #automationengineering #jamesmichaelgroup #diversity #hiring #toptalent #jobpostings #iiot #supplychain #coaching #q4hiring #2024hiring #skillsgap #softskills #secretsauce #timeisgold #hiringstruggles #culture #strategy Happy Hunting!!
