Is there a disconnect between HR and the C-suite? That was the topic of the discussion at last night's London HR Connection event. The discussion was prompted by research from Lattice on the State of People Strategy 2023 and included input from over 1000 HR leaders and C-suite executives. It showed that there was a very different perception between the impact #HR leaders think they are having on the business and how C-suite leaders sees it. My key takeaways and thoughts from the conversation were: 🔗 It all starts with the alignment of purpose, values, goals and objectives. This builds the basis for HR and the C-suite to collaborate on reaching a common goal. HR's strategies need to be fully aligned to and in service of the bigger picture. It's about collaboration. 🕸 Acknowledging that in a complex system that is a business, everyone is contributing in some way to what is called business performance but that isolating individual functions' contribution can be very hard. 🔢 In business, there will always be tension between the harder (numbers, outputs, money) and the softer (people, relationships, engagement) elements but unless leaders recognise that without people, there is no output, business will not be successful in the long run. 💬 As HR, our job to bring people topics to the C-suite and board is ongoing. Using data, storytelling and language that the business understands is key to helping leaders understand the "so what?". 📑 HR leaders can't expect the C-suite to understand them if HR doesn't understand the business and its context. It's a two-way road. 💡 This discussion isn't unique to HR but I have witnessed it in other support functions like Procurement. Often, too much time and energy is spent on justifying why we exist, rather than creating value for the customer. Is that where we should be putting our energy? What are your thoughts on the topic? #HRleadership #betterbusinesses #purpose #alignment Photo by Jonny Gios on Unsplash

For HR to be truly effective as a strategic partner, trust must be at the core of this relationship. Trust is built through transparency, consistent communication, and a deep understanding of business needs. HR must proactively engage with business leaders, demonstrating an in-depth knowledge of organizational goals and offering tailored solutions that align with the company’s strategic objectives. The value HR brings to the organization is multifaceted. HR professionals contribute a unique perspective that encompasses talent management, organizational culture, and employee engagement—key elements that drive business performance. Their experience in handling complex workforce issues and their skill in navigating the human aspects of business challenges make them invaluable partners in decision-making processes. Additionally, HR’s ability to forecast and manage future talent needs ensures that the organization remains competitive and agile in a rapidly changing market. To elevate HR’s role to the C-suite level, it’s crucial for HR leaders to position themselves as business leaders first, with a focus on metrics that demonstrate the impact of HR initiatives on the bottom line. By aligning HR strategies with overall business objectives and speaking the language of business—such as ROI, growth, and profitability—HR can be seen as a critical driver of organizational success. Integrating HR into the C-suite reinforces the message that people are central to business strategy, thereby positioning HR as a key player in shaping the future of the organization. Stories of Asia
