𝐀𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲. 🎯 Many candidates make the mistake of diving into details, to support their answer. The problem: You take too long and the hiring manager already drifted off. They are also probably thinking, "You are not answering the question. Did they understand? Or is it a cognitive issue or communication style?" This sounds cold, but it's not far from reality. People do make judgements especially from details we are not even aware of. Do yourself a favor with this one small adjustment. 𝐀𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬. For example, why did you leave Company A? 1️⃣ I left because they 𝘭𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 in Singapore. For a few years, they did well but...(these are details you can fill in.) 2️⃣ Company A did very well even during pandemic. We were killing it in the market with our technology. Customers love our products and clients include xyz. I was their lead engineer, and managed a team of 5 while being hands-on myself.... ..... ..... (5 minutes in) Unfortunately sales slowed down this year, and investors stopped their funding. Our Singapore office was forced to liquidate. The two answers would lead to the same conclusion, but the second answer took a whopping 5 minutes before I figured out why. The first one took 5 seconds. Attention is the modern day currency, and if you can grab and maintain the attention of the interviewer, you will be top of mind among the candidates.
