Had someone ask me what I would do to break into a new industry as a sales person. Here’s my answer… 📝 Make a list of 20 companies you want to work for 🔎 Research those companies. 🔹what do they sell? 🔹who do they sell to? 🔹who are their competitors? During your research, find key contacts That could be: 🔸recruiters 🔸 sales leaders 🔸someone in the role you’re targeting Leverage all that info and start connecting with and reaching out to those contacts with a relevant message highlighting what you know about the company/industry, and how your experience makes you a good fit for the role. This will take multiple touches just like a sales cycle. If you follow this process, you should land 3-5 interviews with companies on that list. Interviews are sales opportunities. Start to look at the process from a sales lens. Now go close the deal. Have you done anything else to help land an interview? What’s worked for you? If you're on some kind of first sales-type call (sales demo, job interview, dating, fundraising, etc.), the best thing you can do is knock the interviewer out of their script. People who take a lot of similar calls with new people (i.e. recruiters, founders, attractive single people) typically have a script. When they start talking, they go into auto-pilot. Your job is to jolt them out of this. Doing this takes wit. You have to find something novel in the moment that the other person is deeply interested in. This comes to some people quite naturally. Others must ruthlessly practice it. This is generally what people mean when they say they're "good at sales".

I still get the impression sales is a misunderstood profession, especially from the youngsters coming up, and from the interviews I’ve been doing. Sales is about helping, it’s about consulting and understanding, it’s about asking meaningful questions, reflecting and responding with the idea to solve problems. A few reminders for my network when prepping for a sales interview: 1. Come prepared with numbers. -Hiring managers and recruiters have been getting more thorough with their quantitative vetting. Don't just roll up with "100% to quota the last 3 years". Get specific. Know what your average deal size is. Be prepared to give an accurate answer (or range at least) when asked "how many deals did you close last year?". 2. Know who you are speaking to, understand what they care about. -A lot of this is in the job description, but a lot of it is up to you: just as you would find out WHY a prospect might be interested in something you sell (pain points, lack of knowledge, etc), find out WHY the company is hiring. Understand what problem you'd be solving. 3. Ask insightful questions that you are actually curious about. -Although it's somewhat fair for a candidate to ask me "well, what questions should I ask?", I often redirect it to "well, what are you curious about?". Here is the driving question to spur curiosity... "If the hiring manager offers me a job one minute into the call, what would I need to know in order to accept the job or refuse the offer?"
