🚨 BERA Conference Recap! 🚨 At this year’s BERA Conference, Gemma Moss participated in the thought-provoking panel: "The intersection between research and policy: Perspectives, experiences, and understandings of academic researchers and Ofsted." The discussion delved into the critical challenges and opportunities in fostering collaboration between academic researchers and policymakers at Ofsted, and the barriers that can often stand between research and policy implementation. The panel emphasized the importance of building trusted partnerships and explored practical strategies to create productive, long-lasting collaboration between academia and government bodies. 🌍🤝📚 Let's continue fostering these essential partnerships for impactful research and policy. #BERAWERA2024 #ResearchAndPolicy #Collaboration #AcademiaAndGovernment #Ofsted #GemmaMoss #EducationResearch #BERAPanel

Assistant Proffessor Jan Hausfeld and Associate Professor Artūras Juodis have both received a Vidi Grant from the NWO (Dutch Research Council). 👏 Hausfeld’s project, 'Us vs. Them: Using Attention to Understand and Reduce Discrimination', studies how attention affects discrimination, especially in group decisions. Using eye-tracking technology, he hopes to uncover hidden biases and help make hiring and resource distribution fairer. In 'Enhancing Interpretability and Transparency of Econometric Procedures for Dynamic Economic Models,' Juodis is working to make complex economic models easier to understand. His research will help economists get clearer insights for better policy and economic forecasts.

This paper examines the time-varying directional predictability from the implied volatility of risky assets, such as US stocks, to the implied volatility of less risky or safe haven assets, such as gold, cryptocurrency, foreign exchange rates, and US Treasury notes, which allows for making time and regime dependent inferences on the flight-to-safety phenomenon. The results show a positive directional predictability from the VIX to the implied volatility of gold, cryptocurrency, and foreign exchange rates in periods of high market uncertainty such as the COVID-19 outbreak and the war in Ukraine. The volatility of US Treasury notes has a different response dynamic to the VIX, switching to negative cross-correlations in some cases, given its tight link to inflationary pressure and economic policy uncertainty. The main results remain qualitatively unchanged after incorporating economic policy uncertainty and oil volatility. An additional analysis indicates that flight-to-safety is not exclusively triggered by the high volatility regime in US equities but happens at median levels too. Our findings have important implications for investors, risk managers, and policymakers regarding volatility predictability, hedging, and market stability. Keywords: Flight-to-safety; implied volatility; gold; cryptocurrency; S&P 500 VIX; US Treasury notes; foreign exchange rates; COVID-19 outbreak and war periods; quantile dependency
Once again, I am honored and delighted to share with you another significant contribution to the research community! It is with great pride that my co-author and I share the acceptance of our paper, entitled " Flight-to-safety across time and market conditions " for publication in The Journal of International Review of Economics and Finance (IREF). IREF is a prominent international journal with a SCIMAGO Q1 classification, ABDC A rating, Impact Factor 4.5, CiteScore 5.7, and an H-Index of 78. This acceptance is a testament to the quality and relevance of our research, and we look forward to sharing our findings with the academic community. Honored to raise the FGM flag once again, demonstrating our commitment to advancing knowledge and contributing to the ongoing conversation in our field. We anticipate that the paper will be made available online shortly, allowing researchers worldwide to access our research and further the ongoing dialogue on this topic. Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to our organization. We look forward to continuing to make significant contributions to the field of economics and finance.

Transdisciplinary researcher. Focus on sustainability transitions & transformations. Expert on urban experimentation
The Eu-SPRI Forum was held this week in Enschede, bringing together over 350 people from mostly European institutions interested in science, technology, and innovation (STI) policy. The following points stood out for me: - We are finally getting a more nuanced and empirically informed debate about how missions and transformative policy are implemented. The boundary between these two approaches is fuzzier and very contextual. Transformative research was much more present with a dedicated track. There is still much definitional heavy lifting, but I saw appreciation for the diverse practices and (ethical) struggles of individual researchers and questions about the institutional support for engaged/action/transdisciplinary modes of research. - The impact agenda is in full swing, and most people are grappling with the consequences of it. The mismatch between the collective nature of impact and the individualised rewards and recognition system was very apparent. Most transdisciplinary collaborations require varied contributions, with researchers assuming multiple roles. I wish there were more space in the conference to connect with debates about co-production, which have already gone a lot further in unpacking what happens in these processes. How do we acknowledge varied contributions, serendipitous processes and the (slow) emergent and open-ended nature of 'impact' in the rapid pace of current academia? I wish we could all read, discuss and implement the likes of "The Slow Professor" https://lnkd.in/ePWUe7XT - Finally, I am glad to see Utrecht University and other Dutch universities trying their best to redress some of these significant structural barriers to more engaged scholarship. Every month that passes, it feels like we are taking steps in the right direction. It is great when many of your colleagues and bosses discuss science policy and the need for more humane and transformative academia. Next stop: IST in Oslo.

Foundational Papers in Complexity Science! Foundational Papers presents the first unified charting of the full territory of complexity science—an essential resource for navigating the modern world. These four volumes are a product of collective intelligence More than a compilation, Foundational Papers represents large-scale collaboration within the SFI community—brilliant thinkers who have contextualized the work that shaped their own research, resulting in a sparkling demonstration of how complexity shatters the usual scientific divisions and a look back at the path we’ve followed in order to gain a clearer view of what lies ahead. Volumes 1 & 2 just landed in my mailbox. Looking forward to the read! Foundational Papers in Complexity Science. Edited by David C. Krakauer. 4 volumes. Santa Fe, NM: SFI Press, 2024. WORKSHOP INVITATION & CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS Berlin, 16.07.2024 - 17.07.2024 Are you interested in or working on the following questions? • Which methodologies allow engagement with activistically produced knowledge or with people who embody knowledge without merely “legitimizing” it academically? • What are the possibilities and boundaries of participatory methodologies? • Who is the research for and what are the possibilities of putting the research to use in communities beyond “research dissemination”? • How can knowledge produced in an academic context inform practices of resistance and vice versa? Please consider to submit a proposal for 1.5h session to discuss these questions. There are three options of participation you can choose from: 1. Conducting a workshop yourself 2. Research Presentation within the workshop in the style of a conference panel 3. Participation in the workshop Submit your proposal to ar.conference@dezim-institut.de by 08.07.2024
