Is it the Truth...?
1:06:06
but but now it's like it's you know the the challenge for creators right now is is is telling stories that that um
1:06:15
expand over time you know and building trust that lasts a long time and and as as as I say you can you can engage
1:06:20
people or I can engage people by by reaching them but but the the the question that I find more interesting
1:06:26
when it comes to you know success you know how successful am I or what's my how successful am I is it's not how many
1:06:33
people have I reached it's of the people that I reached how many of those did I move whether whether that's I reached 20
1:06:40
people two people two million people 20 million people 200 million people
1:06:45
whatever that number is What proportion of those people did I move and then the question becomes for any artist what
1:06:50
does it take to move a person what does that take and there's only one answer to that
1:06:56
really and it's to be you the person who you are and to tell stories that are
1:07:01
true to to tell the truth you don't have to be honest all the time and this is exactly how I see everything

Clarity, experience, decisiveness and kindness.
If those are on the plate, I have no doubt success will be manifested.
Thinking back to the strongest relationships in my life, the projects that have brought the most reward - it's because of these four things.
At X&O, we frequently reference Rick Rubin's 60 Minutes interview. One where he lays these out humbly and directly.
"Do you play instruments?"
"Barely."
"Do you know how to work a soundboard?"
"No. I have no technical ability. And I know nothing about music."
"You must know something."
"Well, I know what I like and what I don’t like. And I’m decisive about what I like and what I don’t like."
"So what are you being paid for?"
"The confidence that I have in my taste and my ability to express what I feel has proven helpful for artists."
Decisive. Leaning on taste and gut. Not overbearing the process with statistics and data (or an instrument :-). And having the confidence that your experience will guide you to the right place.
Amen, you Zeus-like God of clarity and creativity.
Let's all be a little more like Rick.
