Day 9 of #SeaAdvent: Building Allies at Sea⚓ Creating true diversity at sea requires more than good intentions - it demands meaningful #allyship and concrete actions to make it work. The campaign by ISWAN is leading the charge for change, and that is vitally important. It's not enough to discuss diversity; we must act to create safe, supportive environments for everyone—whether they're already at sea or considering joining the profession. BUT... 🌊 Change Needs Support: The campaign tagline is "Be that seafarer – Be an ally", and paying attention to the situations on the ship is important, but the leadership and responsibility cannot be just onboard. It must come from both shore and ship. We need to nurture positive change across our industry. It's essential to foster respect, relationships, and collaboration among all crew members, but shore teams are also responsible. They need to invest in the time, resources, messaging and education needed to make diversity thrive at sea. ⚖️ Allyship Embraces Everyone: This is about creating an environment where everyone can succeed. We need to support both existing seafarers and newcomers as our maritime landscape evolves, helping everyone navigate and embrace these changes together. 💬 Cultural Understanding Matters: Success requires addressing broader cultural contexts. We need to engage with families ashore, sharing real stories that demonstrate how diversity strengthens our industry. By building understanding, we can help reduce the pressures that seafarers can face from home regarding career choices and working environments. These cultural tensions can create significant stress, but with collective support, we can ease these pressure points. 💡 Creating Inclusive Spaces and the tools to succeed: Building truly inclusive environments demands action from everyone - at sea and ashore. This means investing in physical infrastructure: appropriate changing facilities, properly fitted PPE for all body types, and comprehensive personal care provisions that meet everyone's needs. Real inclusion requires more than supportive words - it demands tangible changes and investment. These have to sit in balance with the demands placed on all onboard. By taking these concrete steps together, we can build a maritime industry that truly works for everyone. Will you join us in making these changes happen? #SeaAdvent #Allyship #MaritimeDiversity #SafeShips #SeafarersWellbeing #DiversityAndInclusion #CrewAllySHIP #WeAllBelong

The AI image is rubbish (they usually are), and I have been rightly called out on the "dude heaviness" of it all, and of undermining the aspirational nature of the post. Thank you for raising the issue, I appreciate the chance to think about it more. There was no intention to detract from what was meant to be a positive message, but I totally get the point - and value the chance to further explore an important discussion about how we visually represent diversity in maritime. How then do we balance authenticity versus aspiration in industry communications? How do we balance visual storytelling? Do we showcase the current reality to highlight the scale of change needed? Do we present an aspirational future to inspire transformation? Or do we focus on highlighting the genuine progress being made through real success stories? The challenges I encountered in generating AI images with female seafarers point to deeper (tech, societal and shipping industry) issues - both in AI training data and in our sector's historical demographics. These technical limitations mirror the very real challenges we're working to overcome. Hopefully, a conversation about visual representation is all part of moving toward meaningful change. What are your thoughts on effectively communicating both our industry's challenges and our commitment to progress?

Not too long ago, we proudly organised and hosted our very own event: Maritime Career Days. During this two-day event, we engaged with first-year students from STC in Rotterdam (RMI), giving them a glimpse into the maritime industry and the opportunity to envision their future careers. Our goal? To show these young talents the exciting possibilities that await them in the maritime world. And guess what? It was a great success 🙌 By the end of the event, the students were curious, asked lots of good questions, and left the event with a better understanding of the industry. How did we make this happen? It was all thanks to the support from our amazing clients. A huge shoutout to A2B-online , Wärtsilä, FAIRPLAY TOWAGE Group, Seafox, Boskalis, and Rijkswaterstaat for stepping in to inspire the next generation. Their presentations, workshops, and boat visits left a lasting impression. 💡 Want to know more about what went down during the Maritime Career Days? Check out our article on the website! → https://lnkd.in/egS_mMr6 Are you part of the maritime industry and want to make a difference for students? We’re gearing up for our second edition of the Maritime Career Days on 12 and 13 February. This time in Flushing (Vlissingen), in partnership with HZ University of Applied Sciences and Scalda. If you’d like to participate OR join a future edition, reach out to Isabelle van der Paal at isabelle@tospeople.com. 📩 We’re just getting started! The success of this initiative has shown us the potential to do even more. There are so many students out there who can benefit from events like these. Want to help? Let’s inspire the next wave of maritime professionals together! 🌟 #MaritimeCareerDays #FutureOfMaritime #TOSPeople

At Serco, we’re committed to nurturing career development for students passionate about the maritime industry. Our RSV Nuyina team has offered a variety of opportunities for students to engage in Cadetships (Deck & Engineering) and Traineeships (Trainee Integrated Ratings), combining practical experience with academic study aboard this state-of-the-art icebreaker. This unique environment provides students with the skills and confidence to excel. Meet Ayla Rance, a student from the Australian Maritime College in Tasmania, currently completing her sea time aboard RSV Nuyina. Growing up in Hobart, Ayla was inspired by her grandparents, who lived on a boat, igniting her passion for the maritime world. “I’ve been pretty much on boats my whole life,” she says, reflecting on her early experiences sailing and working on ferries. Her journey took off after guidance from a Marine Pilot led her to study nautical science at AMC, setting her on a course toward a professional career at sea. Ayla's path was not always smooth sailing. Her first cadetship was isolating, as she was the only female on board. But everything changed when she joined RSV Nuyina, where she found a supportive and inclusive environment. “The culture onboard the Nuyina is amazing. Everyone is so supportive, and I feel incredibly valued and included,” Ayla shares. Through her role as a Cadet, Ayla has gained invaluable experience in navigation, maritime operations, and teamwork. “It’s such an amazing learning space, and the culture on board really contributes to that.” Balancing both her sea time and her studies, Ayla is on track to complete her degree after her cadetship. The most invaluable part of her experience has been the mentorship from experienced Masters and Officers, whose wealth of knowledge has been instrumental in her professional growth. “One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of a positive and inclusive culture. It truly makes a difference in the overall experience and contributes to everyone’s growth,” Ayla says. Looking to the future, Ayla hopes to return to RSV Nuyina as a Third Officer, with the ultimate goal of becoming a ship’s Master. “My dream is to return to the Nuyina as a Third Officer,” she shares. By supporting students like Ayla, Serco is shaping the future of maritime leadership, fostering both skill and environmental consciousness in the next generation of professionals.
