Our next STEM campaigner is Charlotte Gerritsen, associate professor in Artificial Intelligence at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). Her research focuses on AI and Behaviour. Nearly two years after the launch of ChatGPT, much attention has been paid to how Generative AI can automate current teaching models and promote efficiencies in education. Yet, Generative AI also offers a far bolder opportunity to transform the very way students learn: through creation. We also know from our soon-to-be- released Stanford Accelerator for Learning research and from a recent May 2024 survey from the Walton Family Foundation that educators are seeking creative applications as their top use case with Generative AI. In this context, the Stanford Accelerator for Learning is launching a new seed grant program: Learning Through Creation with Generative AI, with two broad goals: ✔ Foster new solutions focused on learning through creation with AI technologies. ✔ Shape the discourse about the use of Generative AI beyond efficiency toward empowering educators and learners themselves toward innovative and creative use cases. The seed grant is open to faculty, staff and students at Stanford University. External partners are also welcome to participate in teaming up with our Stanford scholars. 🚀 Excited to share a milestone in my academic journey! I am thrilled to announce that I have achieved both an h-index and an i10-index of 10, with all papers as the first author and very low self-citations, despite being away from academia since 2014 and relatively small research community in the field of my PhD topic. This accomplishment reflects the impact and recognition of my research within the community of thermal face recognition and AI. 🌟 📈 **h-index:** 10 📈 **i10-index:** 10 I have been working in the domain of face recognition and AI since 2007, and some of my notable contributions include: - AAAI Oral Presentation (one of the top conferences in the field of AI) - Publications in IJCAI (another flagship conference in the AI domain) - Publications in the Pattern Recognition Journal - Pioneering work in Thermal Face Recognition, which gained significant attention during the COVID-19 pandemic - Gathering the largest thermal face database at the time, spanning over four years - Featured in a TV documentary on "Le Code Chastenay, Émission 143, Télé-Québec" I am deeply grateful for the support and collaboration of my colleagues, mentors, and the broader research community. I've been thinking a lot about the future of AI lately. Bill Gates thinks it'll impact education and medicine the most. I can totally see that. Imagine AI-powered tutors that can tailor lessons to each student's learning style or medical diagnoses that are more accurate than ever before. With this new Nobel Prize win, we're opening up even more possibilities for research. I'm excited to see what breakthroughs we'll make in fields like medicine, psychology, sociology, and ethics. AI isn't just about enhancing existing tools and methods. It's creating a demand for new approaches to learning and research, bringing together specialists from all sorts of disciplines. As I embark on the first step of my PhD thesis, this photo captures a moment that reflects the depth of the journey ahead. Immersed in academic papers, I begin the process of synthesizing vast amounts of literature—reading extensively, taking notes, and carefully analyzing each piece to build the foundation for my own work. This is the beginning of the literature review, where I must engage deeply with existing research, question established ideas, and discover gaps that my thesis will address. It’s a rigorous yet exciting phase, knowing that every insight I gain will bring me closer to shaping my argument and contributing to the broader academic discourse.
