I've spent the whole previous week on Stockholm Fintech Week, discovering industry trends and talking about software development with amazing people. And here is the #1 insight I've gained on the way: It's rarely about the solution itself and always about the idea you have, the data you put in it, and the people you turn this into life with. Let me explain it with an AI example ✋ It's not an unknown shady technology anymore, right? You can literally find algorithms on the internet and use it for your product. They are worthless until you fit it into your solution and feed it with the right data. So, it's not an algorithm that makes your product stand out - it's how you use it. Want to make it worth - prioritize data quality! Don't know how to do that or what to do next - find yourself a nice software development partner. It's that simple! Why aren’t Validis a unicorn – yet? 💭 It’s been 600 days since Michael Turner joined us as CEO – and he’s spent a good chunk of that time pondering that question. He came to two conclusions: - We spent a good few years trying to be everything to everyone. - We only covered about 50% of the market, supporting one language. We get financial data, it’s that simple! And we’re exceptionally good at it. So, the last year has been about refocusing on what we do best. 3 ways we are working to solve this: ✅Back to basics By dropping the extras, we are 100% focused on data ingestion. ✅Expanding our reach We currently support 27+ leading accounting systems – but there are thousands out there. Last year we started trialling new ways of collecting data with the goal of achieving 90% coverage (Watch this space!) ✅UX: Our new frontier Innovation means very little if people don’t actually use it. So, we have also focused on creating user journeys that drive adoption and integrate easily into existing routines. There was always a risk our people wouldn’t like the change. But the opposite is true. In fact, we get lots of feedback that our focus has actually liberated them! We may not be a unicorn. Yet. But we’re certainly on our way. Tech founders and CEO's spent the last eight years pitching investors on vague "data plays" that were supposed to generate big follow-on revenue streams that never materialized. Now that capital is tightening, companies are throwing up their hands and just licensing their user data to AI companies — because their "data play" plans were always a hand-wave designed to attract cheap capital. This growth-above-all-else mentality is a sickness that keeps our industry in a perpetual doom-loop cycle. I don't care how many copies of Built To Last you hand out to managers, you can't build healthy companies for the long term with this way of doing things. And it ends up being employees and customers who suffer.

Last week, I spent 3 days surrounded by fintech visionaries at #fintechmeetup in Las Vegas. Here's a few things I learned: - Ease of integration is top of mind for many. This makes total sense of course: APIs are more often than not a critical product surface for Fintechs. And customers that can't rapidly onboard also won't pay 💸 - We're still in the early days of making true advances in API usability. (Almost) everyone has API docs. Not everyone has an API spec. Some people have written rudimentary usage guides. Very few have anything more - API teams face a huge burden today in building everything themselves. I remember being shocked how scarce great API tooling was years ago, when I was a PM in charge of building a new API -- and unfortunately that doesn't really seem to have changed much - Avoid the electronics craps machines, which have a max odds bet of 2x, effectively increasing the house edge. Don't ask how I know 🫠 Great food for thought for Sagar Batchu and me as we continue to make the lives of API producers and consumers easier. (Shout out to Boyd Wold, Don Cardinal, Daniel Haisley, John Olesky, and Austin Pager who joined us for a lively discussion over an unnecessary amount of 🦞🍤🦪) What else should we know about making great APIs?
