Real talk: Not all great social media managers have mad meme skills. It’s okay to be a social media manager who excels at reactive content. It’s okay to be a social media manager who excels at community building. It’s okay to be a social media manager who excels at paid socials. Social media managers have specializations. Brands should know what their goals are for their social media presence when hiring a social media team. Sorry to tell you but “mad meme skills” may not be enough. #socialmediamanager #socialmediamarketing

And yet brands end up hiring one social media manager who is solely responsible for producing all the content and creatives and expects it to be god level great.

Tameka Bazile expecting the hiring manager to know the difference in specializations is asking a bit much. These initiatives probably start in some Dilbert inspired meeting and progressively goes from comical satire to uncomfortable reality.

And not all brands need “mad meme skills” for their messaging. I keep telling them; just cos it's trending doesn't mean...nvm 🙄 😆

Tbf, I think I'm okay at NSFW memes but LinkedIn appropriate memes? Not so much lmao. And yeah, I think I excel at storytelling and community building. What about you Tameka?

I have recently been told by a company that they expected me to do a little bit of everything in Social Media because they couldn’t afford to have more people working on it (that included graphic design), which obviously meant doing a little bit of everything for the same salary as doing a specific job. Funny thing is this company has a massive presence online, and therefore it would be right for them to invest in building the social media team instead of saving money on it.

So true - trying to excel in every single area of social can lead to a 'Jack of all trades, master of none' situation. (Can't say it's stopped me trying in the past though) 😂

This is so incredibly important for hiring managers to know! I feel like they often don't know enough about the field to use the right terms and get to that specificity that matters.
