We canvassed a lot of practical tips, and two that really stood out for the group were: - showing up and being present is important for you as a leader (to show commitment) as well as for the team (to allow them to have their voice heard) - accountability and taking action when things are not right There are three reasons for me sharing this article 1 Effective Leadership takes effort - and people notice 2 It's very easy to focus on the words, when that's far from the whole of the message 3 One picture can speak a thousand words, yet they may not be the full story #effectiveleadership #leadingchange #training

Currently reading "Let the Score Take Care of Itself: My Philosophy on Leadership", a biography of Bill Walsh. So many great lessons and awesome insights. Here are a few: 1. Standard of Excellence: Walsh emphasizes the importance of setting and maintaining high standards of excellence. Leaders should establish clear expectations and hold themselves and their team accountable to these standards. 2. Attention to Detail: Walsh believed in meticulous planning and attention to detail. He emphasized the importance of focusing on the small things that collectively contribute to success. His preparation for games in unmatched. The detail and complexity of his game plans gave him the nickname "The Genius". Leaders should pay attention to every aspect of their organization and strive for continuous improvement. 3. Developing People: Walsh believed in the importance of developing people both professionally and personally. It's a mark of a GREAT leader by how many leaders are created from your example. Walsh's coaching tree and influence are unmatched. Leaders should invest in the growth and development of their team members, providing them with the necessary resources, guidance, and opportunities to succeed. 4. And finally..... Resilience: Walsh understood the importance of resilience in leadership. Apart from Walsh's many Super Bowl wins and winning seasons there are also many losing seasons and hard times. So much so, that his nickname "The Genius" was used as an insult rather than a compliment. But, he was able to bounce back, learn from his mistakes, and return to success. I'm in the Kansas City Chiefs locker room, standing in front of Travis Kelce's locker. This got me thinking, what are some of the leadership lessons we can learn from this game-changing tight end who is about to play in the Superbowl for the 4th time in 5 years this Sunday? 1️ Relentless Work Ethic: Travis Kelce's success is no accident. It's built on a foundation of relentless hard work and dedication. Whether it's mastering new plays, refining skills, or putting in extra hours in the gym, he leads by example. 2️⃣ Adaptability in Strategy: On the field, Kelce is a master at adapting to ever-changing game scenarios. Off the field, this translates to a leadership lesson in being flexible and open-minded. Leaders should embrace change, pivot when necessary, and adjust strategies to tackle challenges head-on. 3️⃣ Team-first Mentality: Kelce embodies the essence of a team player. This year Dan Campbell has led the Detroit Lions to the Playoffs. One who had been a player, felt the pain of losing, and now is the CEO of a winning team. Why is Campbell different? He is from within. He has been at the grass roots level. He is authentic. He is willing to do the hard things with the players. He is passionate. He is approachable. And He will go to battle with every single player on the Detroit Lions. Executive leaders who have grown up within their organization possess a different kind of acumen and experience. Their stories and perspective have immense relevancy. They are passionate about the whole of the organization. They possess empathy for team members while being able to hold them to the highest standard. Former NFL fullback and current NFL Network analyst Michael Robinson has taken notice of the turnaround in Detroit and attributes a significant portion of it to Campbell’s strong leadership ability. “Well, first of all, what we just saw was examples of authentic leadership, like genuine leadership, right? And, I think that’s a big reason you see players go so hard for Dan Campbell,” Robinson commented, after observing a montage of Campbell soundbites. “I mean, all of those soundbites, he sounds like a teammate. He sounds like one of the tight ends in the room that, you know, has some free time and is always cracking jokes and keeping things light. I mean, he doesn’t feel like management. Leadership lessons from the NFL. What can we learn from this guy 👇, Demeco Ryans, who has taken the Houston Texans from the worst team in American Football to the edge of glory (you're singing Lady Gaga now aren't you) in one season? So what has he done to transform a team and an organisation so quickly? These are just insights I've picked through listening to him at Press Conferences and interviews: 1. Positive Energy - He coaches his teams focusing on what they can do rather than what they cant. The difference that this has made is that once thought average players are now performing at much higher levels 2. Tell The Truth Mondays - They hold themselves fully accountable. After each game they have a full team Tell the Truth session. They don't hide from what went wrong and see mistakes as opportunity's to learn and improve. 3. Ignored the noise - He and the team were not distracted by elements outside of their control. They took no notice of the press or social media but instead trusted in and focused on what they had to do. 4. Great recruitment - As well as bringing in new coaches that he trusted they also recruited the right players. But that wasn't all. Everyone had to buy into what the team was all about. Attitude and character mattered. 5. History was History - What happened yesterday didn't matter. Its about what we do today and tomorrow that's key. 6. Trust - NFL is a physical sport and injuries happen and the Texans had a lot. But Ryans never once used this as an excuse. He trusted the whole squad to go out and perform not just the starters. 7. The opportunity is now - There may well be a three year plan but that doesn't mean that success should be delayed. Have the courage to say why not now and why not us. 8. Keeping perspective - In sport, all teams lose but how the leadership reacts to wins and loses matters. Ryans is a fierce competitor and hates to lose but his demeanour and staying calm under pressure doesn't waiver. 9. Humility - Doesn't trash talk opponents and recognises that he is in a privileged position. He's grateful for the life chances and repays with hard work and commitment to the cause 10. Leaders everywhere - He empowers leadership from all sources and recognises that being a leader is not a title you give yourself but what others give you So much more I could say but his work and leadership style demonstrates how success is multi layered and that when opportunity knocks, say hello and embrace with open arms. 🤘 #houstontexans #leadership

Leadership is about making the effort to show up.

Many of you, probably watched the Chiefs vs Raiders game this past weekend. While you were busy watching the game, Andy Reid, the head coach of Kansas City Chiefs, was parting some valuable leadership lessons on the sidelines. Competitiveness brings the best and worst in people and those are the times when leadership matters the most. This snippet caught my attention. 1. Character is most often tested during the toughest of times Kelce is a good player but keeping your calm becomes even more important when times are tough and players who look up to you are watching and learning from you. Throwing the helmet in a rage, like he did, can happen to the best of us but it is important we remain composed. Outburst are not only unprofessional but rarely help. 2. A leader has to be humble and has to instill humility, doesn’t matter when and where Below you can see Andy Reid, stops a staffer from handing the helmet to Kelce. It is in this moment that he demonstrates leadership and a coaching moment for his team. Bad behavior will not be tolerated no matter the status of the player. 3. A leader takes time to coach no matter how busy they are Andy Reid walks upto Kelce and gives him some words of wisdom. He needs to focus on the game at hand and he has so many staffers who could do it, but it is important for a leader to provide valuable feedback regardless of how much they have on their plate. You have to invest in their growth. 4. Lead with empathy At the tail end, Andy Reid gives Kelce a bit of a friendly shove to let him know he has got his back but more importantly get his head in the game and forget about what happened. No hard feeling. Leaders don’t have to be heavy handed in their feedback. Give feedback but also let them know that you have their back. Support them in their growth. 5. Take feedback with maturity You can see Kelce took the feedback with grace. He accepted the mistake without being defensive and took the feedback in the spirit it was intended. Leadership qualities: "He Hate Me" was the nickname of Rod Smart, a leading rusher in 2002 for the Las Vegas Outlaws of the now defunct XFL pro football league. Looking for an edge, the XFL allowed players to put nicknames on their uniforms. "I was always saying, 'he hate me,' all through camp in Vegas," Smart said. "If I didn't get the ball, I'd talk to the other running backs and say, 'He hate me, man; this coach hate me.' I was always saying that." Smart put He Hate Me on the back of his number 32 jersey, and now the name lives in lore, though XFL has been out of business for years. When I first saw Rod Smart play and his "He Hate Me" jersey, I thought, "Forget about football. That's a leadership lesson!" That's because "He Hate Me" and leadership often go hand-in-hand. Clearly, leadership is not about winning a popularity contest, it's about getting results -- not just average results but more results faster continually. To lead people to get the latter, you often must challenge them to do not what they want to do but what they don't want to do. That's where "He Hate Me" comes in. When you move people from being comfortable getting average results to being uncomfortable doing what's needed to get great results, strong feelings, hatred and anger, are often triggered.
