In my opinion I feel while diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are vital for all businesses, SMEs in Nigeria often prioritize survival due to economic challenges, making DEI seem secondary. These businesses face limited capital, high costs, and regulatory hurdles, focusing on profitability and sustainability. Additionally, societal issues, such as non-inclusive building infrastructures, further complicate DEI implementation. SMEs need realistic, scalable DEI strategies, such as fair hiring and flexible work policies. Support from the government and larger corporations, along with practical approaches, can help SMEs integrate DEI without compromising their primary goals.

2024 will, I hope, be a transformative year on many counts. On a personal note, I have my book coming out soon (watch this space). However, speaking more broadly, I believe this will be the year we begin to see awareness turn to acknowledgement - removing the blinkers to the impact of Diversity and Inclusiveness on business growth agendas In the past 5 years, in particular, we have seen a greater awareness, both within organisations and globally, that issues concerning diversity and inclusion exist. Awareness is great, but on its own, it leads to little action. What we need now is acknowledgement. This goes beyond understanding that a problem exists, to figuring out ways to address it strategically. It involves accountability - i.e. that 'this is not an external problem but one in my own company too'. Ultimately, it is about driving business value. If we can bring enough objectivity into this arena and ensure it is not overshadowed by subjective arguments, then I'm confident greater progress will be made. #DEI #Diversity #Inclusion #TheUncagedShow #Strategy
