Working in a global company means I meet and connect with people from all over the world. I've been doing it for 18 years, and I love seeing how others work and learning how best to collaborate, when there are cultural differences. That's not to say, it doesn't require effort. Relationships don't build themselves. I really liked this HBR article which proposes a research-based framework for building cross-cultural relationships. The framework has six main parts: place, power, purpose, privacy, presence, and pacing. “Place” for example, talks about the importance of the setting – from a café in Copenhagen to an office in the European Parliament or a family event in Italy. And “Pace” is about recognizing when patience is needed in building a relationship. An interesting article with insights to keep in mind. Here’s to approaching new connections with an open mind, respect, and curiosity! https://lnkd.in/eYPKsz-e #culturalawareness #globalworkforce #diversityintech

Some interesting thoughts about building cross cultural relationships in the workplace. As someone who spends a lot of time working with people internationally, these elements of relationship building expectations from one culture to another are so important to keep in mind. I have found that we all make mistakes and assumptions when getting to know someone (whether that be cross-culturally or within the same culture) and when misunderstandings happen, communication is key! I am so grateful to work in a place like Access to Success where at the end of the day, we all understand the "why" behind what we do regardless of which side of the Atlantic we reside. Keeping that in mind as we build relationships with our coworkers goes a long way to form a foundation! https://lnkd.in/e5zKmi4a
