In #SierraLeone, the term "shanty towns" is sometimes used to describe certain communities, including Aberdeen, Lumbly Kroo Town, AJ Momoh Street Tower Hill, Mountain Court, Sumaila Town, and more these Communities are characterized by their informal and makeshift nature. These communities are usually built on the outskirts of cities, in areas that are not officially zoned for residential use. These homes are typically made from scrap materials such as wood, metal, or plastic, and are often overcrowded and unsanitary.
These Shanty communities often lack basic services such as running water, electricity, and sanitation, and residents may face challenges such as food insecurity, crime, and health risks. One of the biggest challenges facing residents of this town is the lack of access to clean water and sanitation.
In many of these shanty communities, residents have to rely on water from polluted sources such as rivers and streams, or they have to purchase water at a high cost. Lack of sanitation can lead to diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea. Another major challenge facing these residents is the lack of access to healthcare. Many residents cannot afford to pay for medical care, and there may not be any nearby clinics or hospitals. This can lead to preventable illnesses and deaths.
