Urgent Webinar Announced on the crisis of birth center closures in California
Midwifery Access California, in partnership with the National Health Law Program and Western Center on Law and Poverty, is hosting an urgent webinar to address the alarming crisis of birth center closures sweeping across the state. The webinar, “Midwives & Medi-Cal: California efforts to improve access to midwife-led care in Medi-Cal and the crisis of birth center closures” will take place on September 10th at 12:00pm PT and is open to the public. As recently reported in Cal Matters, the state is facing an epidemic of hospital maternity ward closures. The problem is now being exacerbated with freestanding birth center closures (see Cal Matters reporting on August 26, 2024 at https://lnkd.in/gTxw6qJc )
As Birth Centers and Midwives face insurmountable financial and regulatory pressures, pregnant individuals and families across California face a public health crisis with fewer and fewer choices for place of birth.
The webinar will feature experts in maternal healthcare, including midwives and birth center owners, who will discuss the reasons behind the closures and outline critical actions that can be taken to protect birth centers in California. This webinar will also highlight the recent work of Midwifery Access California to prevent such closures.

Midwifery Access California (MACa) is a multi-stakeholder collaboration between midwifery practices, Medi-Cal health plans, community advocacy organizations, and state and local agencies. Our goal is to integrate midwife-led care into existing practice settings – such as clinics and hospitals – and to amplify and expand community midwifery (birth care in homes and freestanding birth centers), as a key strategy for improving reproductive health care access and outcomes in California Our project is specifically focused on communities existing on the margins – those most impacted by social, economic, geographic, and health inequities and racism-based disparities.
