It’s too bad that Giving Tuesday comes after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Every year Giving Tuesday rolls around and I know there are folks out there who wish they had more room in their budget to donate to charity, and they don’t because the Black Friday deals were just too good to pass up. So even though we’re a week early, I wanted to encourage you to donate now to your favorite cause BEFORE you go over budget on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. 😁 Like I do every year, I’ll be donating to the Making Headway Foundation, an organization that I’ve been involved with for over 20 years. Numbers that scare me: 4. Only about 4% of those eligible to donate blood in Canada do so. A bit of context around why this number is startlingly low: - It takes up to 5 donations to support a patient undergoing heart surgery - It can take up to 50 donations to save someone seriously injured in a car accident - Someone going through treatment for luekeimia requires up to 8 donations… per week. You get the idea - we can do better than 4%. I closed out a trip home with a trip to Canadian Blood Services for lifetime donation #180. There is a certain magic to donating blood, literally offering up a part of yourself not knowing who might benefit from it. There is something tangible and beautiful about the process. It’s been encouraging to see updates to donor eligibility criteria updated over the past several months to expand the range of eligible donors - if you weren’t previously eligible it might be worth checking in to see if you are now. If you are looking to close out 2023 on a hopeful note, I’d encourage to hop in to donate or make plans to do so in 2024.

Today is World Neurofibromatosis (NF) Awareness Day. As many of you know, our family has battled with NF over many years. This month, I have taken on the challenge to walk 3400kms with the Barney Army this month and raise $15k! NF is a complex, unpredictable and progressive genetic condition that causes tumours to form on nerves, under the skin, and deep in the body. But importantly, it can affect anyone regardless of gender, ethnicity, or family history.  Highly variable, around 1 in 5 children with NF1 will develop a brain tumour; 1 in 4 will develop chronic pain, spinal tumours are seen in 60-80% of NF2 patients, and on average, the lives of those living with NF1 will be reduced by 10-15 years compared to the average population. How NF2 affects me We want you to meet the real life people affected by NF2. We are each affected differently but are linked together by our rare disorder NF2 related Schwannomatosis (NF2) Today we meet Oscar. His NF2 journey started aged 6. "Oscar has a juvenile cataract in his left eye and a very low level hearing loss. He is an NF2 warrior and born a fighter. 11 months ago he underwent major foot surgery due to mobility problems and has just started Avastin infusions which are every 2 weeks " NF2 is a life long genetic condition There is no beginning, middle or ending to any of our stories, no remission or breaks. No bells to ring. NF2 IS FOR LIFE. Reading real life stories about how NF2 affects people helps others to understand why we need better treatments. Treatment options are surgery/radiosurgery/chemotherapy which often results in loss of function of the involved nerve. Our children have even less options and that is why we need to do more.
